Amsterdam to Oslo (Gardermoen) (AMS–OSL) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Dutch passport holders enter Norway freely. Norway is in the Schengen area and the EEA, so travel from the Netherlands is intra-Schengen with no passport control on arrival. Bring your Dutch passport or national ID card for airline boarding. No visa, no time limit on stays for EEA nationals. For stays beyond 3 months, register online at the UDI website (udi.no) and then visit a Service Centre for ID verification to obtain a registration certificate.

EU/EEA citizens have the right to live and work in Norway without a work permit. Norway is not in the EU, which means some differences in import rules (lower duty-free limits: 1 liter spirits, 1.5 liters wine, and 2 liters beer). Food items brought from the EU face some restrictions, unlike travel between EU countries. If you plan to drive, your Dutch license is valid in Norway.

Direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol to Oslo Gardermoen run about 2 hours on KLM, Norwegian, and SAS. Direct flights also serve Bergen, Stavanger, and Trondheim. Norway uses the Norwegian krone (NOK), trading at roughly 11.2 NOK per EUR 1. Card payments work everywhere, and many businesses do not accept cash. No mandatory vaccinations. Norway is expensive: a restaurant main course costs NOK 200 to NOK 400 (EUR 18 to EUR 36), a pint of beer NOK 90 to NOK 120 (EUR 8 to EUR 11). The Flytoget express train from Oslo Gardermoen to Oslo Central Station takes 19 minutes and costs NOK 230 (about EUR 21). The regular NSB train takes 23 minutes for NOK 117.

Intercity and Sprinter trains run directly to Schiphol Plaza (the station is inside the terminal) from Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). The Intercity Direct from Rotterdam takes 43 minutes (€17.40 with supplement). Trains from The Hague take 35–45 minutes.

Taxis from central Amsterdam cost €35–50 and take 20–35 minutes. Highway A4 is frequently congested during morning rush. Bus 397 runs from Amsterdam Leidseplein to Schiphol (30 min, €5.50) for a cheaper landside alternative.

Flytoget trains depart from the station below the arrivals hall every 10 minutes, reaching Oslo Central Station in 19 minutes (NOK 230-252). Buy from the yellow machines on the platform or tap your card on board. Vy regional trains leave from the same platform and take 23-25 minutes for NOK 129. Both trains share the track through Romerike and only diverge on timing and price.

Flybussen coaches stop at the terminal exit and serve central hotels and bus hubs (NOK 259 pre-booked, 45-55 minutes). Taxis queue outside arrivals with fixed-price zones posted at the rank. Expect NOK 700-1200 to central Oslo depending on your destination and time of day. Car rental desks are in the arrivals hall with vehicles in the adjacent parking structure.

Oslo has cold winters and mild summers. December through February averages -7 to -1 degrees C with short daylight hours (the sun sets by 15:10 in mid-December). Snow is reliable from November onward, and icy roads are standard. Summers (June-August) bring long days and highs of 18-22 degrees C with 18+ hours of daylight around the solstice. Rain peaks in late summer and autumn at 65-90mm per month.

Spring thaws through March and April with rapid warming into May (8-16 degrees C). Autumn cools fast after September, dropping to 3 degrees C by November. Annual rainfall totals about 830mm, spread fairly evenly but slightly heavier in summer and fall. Pack thermal layers and waterproof outerwear for winter. Summer visitors still need a jacket for cool evenings and a rain shell for afternoon showers.
