About Airport Delays

The FAA monitors 179 US airports with real-time delay data. This dashboard shows live on-time performance for all 177 airports currently reporting, updated every 5 minutes.

The on-time percentage represents the proportion of flights departing or arriving within 15 minutes of their scheduled time. An airport with 85% on-time means 85 out of every 100 flights are on schedule. Anything above 80% is considered good performance.

Delay data is sourced from the FAA and updates every 5 minutes. Historical views (past hour, 24 hours, 7 days) use weighted averages that account for flight volume, giving busier time periods more influence on the numbers.

Airport delays are typically caused by weather (thunderstorms, fog, snow), air traffic volume, runway capacity constraints, staffing issues, and cascading effects from earlier disruptions. Delays tend to worsen throughout the day as problems compound.

Book early morning departures — they have the highest on-time rates since there are fewer cascading delays. Check this dashboard before heading to the airport, consider nearby alternative airports when your airport shows major delays, and allow extra time during peak travel periods.
