New York to Oslo (Gardermoen) (JFK–OSL) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

US passport holders enter Norway visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen area. No advance application is needed. Norway is a Schengen member but not an EU member. Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area. At Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL), Bergen Flesland (BGO), or any Norwegian airport, immigration stamps your passport at the non-EU line.

The 90-day Schengen clock runs across all 29 Schengen countries. Days spent in Sweden, Denmark, or any other Schengen state count toward the same 90-day limit. Norway's fjords, northern lights, and midnight sun are the primary draws. The Bergen Railway from Oslo to Bergen (7 hours) crosses the Hardangervidda plateau at 1,222m and is one of Europe's most scenic train rides. The Flam Railway branches off for a 1-hour descent to the Aurlandsfjord. Hurtigruten coastal ferries run from Bergen to Kirkenes over 6 days, stopping at 34 ports along the coast.

Direct flights from New York JFK and Newark to Oslo run about 7 hours 30 minutes on SAS and United. Seasonal service operates to Bergen. Norwegian Air connects US cities through London Gatwick. Norway uses the Norwegian krone (NOK), trading at roughly 11 NOK per $1. Card payments work everywhere, including rural areas, public toilets, and street vendors. Cash is rarely needed. The Flytoget airport express runs from OSL to Oslo Central Station in 19 minutes for NOK 220 ($20). Local trains and buses use the Ruter app in the Oslo region for NOK 40 ($3.65) per single ride. Norway is expensive: a restaurant meal costs NOK 200 to NOK 400 ($18 to $36) and a beer costs NOK 90 to NOK 120 ($8 to $11). Grocery stores and cooking in are common budget strategies.

The AirTrain connects JFK to the NYC subway and Long Island Rail Road at Jamaica Station (Howard Beach is the other connection point). Subway fare plus AirTrain totals $9.25 from midtown Manhattan; allow 60–75 minutes. LIRR from Penn Station takes 25–30 minutes to Jamaica, then 8–10 minutes on AirTrain; total fare around $10–15 depending on time of day.Taxis from Manhattan to JFK are a flat rate of $70 plus tolls and tip ($85–95 all-in). Ride-shares cost $45–80 depending on traffic and time of day. A dedicated express rail (JFK Connect) has been proposed but does not exist yet.

Flytoget trains depart from the station below the arrivals hall every 10 minutes, reaching Oslo Central Station in 19 minutes (NOK 230-252). Buy from the yellow machines on the platform or tap your card on board. Vy regional trains leave from the same platform and take 23-25 minutes for NOK 129. Both trains share the track through Romerike and only diverge on timing and price.

Flybussen coaches stop at the terminal exit and serve central hotels and bus hubs (NOK 259 pre-booked, 45-55 minutes). Taxis queue outside arrivals with fixed-price zones posted at the rank. Expect NOK 700-1200 to central Oslo depending on your destination and time of day. Car rental desks are in the arrivals hall with vehicles in the adjacent parking structure.

Oslo has cold winters and mild summers. December through February averages -7 to -1 degrees C with short daylight hours (the sun sets by 15:10 in mid-December). Snow is reliable from November onward, and icy roads are standard. Summers (June-August) bring long days and highs of 18-22 degrees C with 18+ hours of daylight around the solstice. Rain peaks in late summer and autumn at 65-90mm per month.

Spring thaws through March and April with rapid warming into May (8-16 degrees C). Autumn cools fast after September, dropping to 3 degrees C by November. Annual rainfall totals about 830mm, spread fairly evenly but slightly heavier in summer and fall. Pack thermal layers and waterproof outerwear for winter. Summer visitors still need a jacket for cool evenings and a rain shell for afternoon showers.
