South Korean passport holders enter Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. No supporting documents are required at the border, though having a return ticket and hotel booking is helpful.

At immigration, your passport is stamped with the entry date. The 90-day limit is Turkey-specific, not shared with any other visa zone. For stays beyond 90 days, apply for a residence permit through the e-ikamet system (e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr) within 30 days of arrival. The short-term residence permit costs about TRY 1,500 to TRY 3,000 (roughly $45 to $90) depending on duration and is processed at the local Provincial Directorate of Migration Management.

Direct flights from Seoul Incheon to Istanbul (IST) run about 11 hours on Turkish Airlines and Korean Air. Turkey uses the Turkish lira (TRY), which fluctuates significantly. ATMs are everywhere, and card payments are standard in cities and tourist areas. No mandatory vaccinations. The Istanbulkart (TRY 70 for the card, loaded separately) works on all Istanbul transit including metro, tram, bus, ferry, and Marmaray. Turkish Airlines offers free Istanbul layover tours (Touristanbul program) for transit passengers with 6 to 24 hour connections.

AREX (Airport Railroad Express) runs two services from Seoul Station: the Direct Train (43 min, ₩11,000, reserved seats) and the All-Stop train (66 min, ₩4,550, unreserved). Both trains serve T1 first, then T2; confirm which terminal your airline uses before boarding.Limousine buses depart from major Seoul neighborhoods and hotels (₩16,000–18,000, 60–90 min depending on traffic). KAL and LIMOUSINE services are reliable. Taxis from central Seoul cost ₩65,000–80,000 and take 60–90 minutes. Deluxe (black) taxis are pricier but English-speaking drivers are more common.

M11 Metro to Gayrettepe takes about 35 minutes (₺60–70 with Istanbulkart) with connections to M2 (Taksim) and M7. Runs from 5am to midnight. The metro bypasses O-7 motorway traffic, which is frequently heavy into the city.Havaist buses serve major destinations including Taksim, Kadıköy (European and Asian sides), and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (₺50–80). Taxis from arrivals are metered; insist on the meter. Journey to Sultanahmet or Taksim costs ₺400–700 depending on traffic. Rental cars available. Hotel shuttles common for business hotels near the city.

The new airport sits 35km from central Istanbul on the European side, slightly inland and exposed to Black Sea weather systems. Winters (December–March) are cold (0–8°C) with fog, rain, and occasional snow. Snow on the exposed plateau is more likely than in the city. Ice on taxiways causes delays.

Summers are warm (25–32°C) with dry, reliable weather. Spring and fall bring heavy rain and strong northerly winds (Poyraz) that can affect smaller aircraft. Fog is the primary low-season disruption risk. The airport's elevated position makes it slightly windier than the Atatürk site it replaced.
