Doha to Istanbul (DOH–IST) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Qatari passport holders enter Turkey visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. No fee, no e-visa, no advance application. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. At Istanbul Airport (IST), Sabiha Gokcen (SAW), or Antalya (AYT), you receive a stamp at immigration. Turkey and Qatar have strong bilateral ties, and the entry process for Qatari nationals is fast, often under 5 minutes.

The 90/180-day rule works the same as Schengen: count backward 180 days from any entry date, and you must not have spent more than 90 days in Turkey during that window. For longer stays, apply for a residence permit through e-ikamet.goc.gov.tr within the first 90 days. Turkey offers a citizenship-by-investment program through real estate purchase ($400,000 minimum) or bank deposit ($500,000 minimum).

Direct flights from Doha to Istanbul run about 4 hours 30 minutes on Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines. Multiple daily frequencies, with up to 6 flights per day between the two cities. Direct flights to Antalya, Trabzon, and Bodrum operate seasonally. Turkey uses the Turkish lira (TRY), trading at roughly 10 TRY per QAR 1. ATMs are everywhere, and card payments work at most businesses. No mandatory vaccinations. The Istanbulkart works on all Istanbul transit (metro, bus, tram, ferry) at TRY 17.70 per trip (about QAR 1.75). Turkish is the primary language, but Arabic is widely understood in tourist areas and the southeastern provinces.

Doha Metro Gold Line connects the city center directly to Hamad International; the Hamad International Airport station is at the terminal (15–20 min from Al Bidda / West Bay area, QAR 3–6). Metro runs 6am–11pm Sunday–Wednesday, until midnight Thursday, and 2pm–1am Friday. The Gold Line also connects to the Red and Green lines at Msheireb station for wider coverage.Taxis from West Bay / downtown Doha cost QAR 30–50 and take 15–25 minutes. Karwa taxis are metered and more regulated than informal options. Ride-hail apps (Careem, Uber) operate widely in Doha.

M11 Metro to Gayrettepe takes about 35 minutes (₺60–70 with Istanbulkart) with connections to M2 (Taksim) and M7. Runs from 5am to midnight. The metro bypasses O-7 motorway traffic, which is frequently heavy into the city.Havaist buses serve major destinations including Taksim, Kadıköy (European and Asian sides), and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (₺50–80). Taxis from arrivals are metered; insist on the meter. Journey to Sultanahmet or Taksim costs ₺400–700 depending on traffic. Rental cars available. Hotel shuttles common for business hotels near the city.

The new airport sits 35km from central Istanbul on the European side, slightly inland and exposed to Black Sea weather systems. Winters (December–March) are cold (0–8°C) with fog, rain, and occasional snow. Snow on the exposed plateau is more likely than in the city. Ice on taxiways causes delays.

Summers are warm (25–32°C) with dry, reliable weather. Spring and fall bring heavy rain and strong northerly winds (Poyraz) that can affect smaller aircraft. Fog is the primary low-season disruption risk. The airport's elevated position makes it slightly windier than the Atatürk site it replaced.
