Amsterdam to Rome (AMS–FCO) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Dutch passport holders enter Italy freely as EU citizens. No visa, no time limit on stays. Bring your Dutch passport or national ID card. Italy is in both the EU and the Schengen area, so flights from the Netherlands are intra-Schengen with no passport control on arrival. Carry your ID for airline boarding and hotel check-in (Italian hotels are required by law to record guest ID details).

For stays beyond 3 months, register at the local Anagrafe (civil registry office) within 20 days to obtain a certificato di residenza. You need proof of employment, study enrollment, or sufficient funds (no fixed threshold for EU citizens). EU citizens can live and work in Italy without a work permit. Italy's bureaucracy can be slower than what you're used to in the Netherlands, so bring patience and all documents in duplicate.

Direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol to Rome Fiumicino run about 2 hours 30 minutes on KLM, ITA Airways, and Transavia. Direct flights also serve Milan, Venice, Naples, Bologna, Florence, Pisa, and Catania from Amsterdam and Eindhoven on KLM, Transavia, EasyJet, and Ryanair. Italy uses the euro, same as the Netherlands, so no currency exchange needed. No mandatory vaccinations. Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains connect Rome to Milan in 2 hours 55 minutes, Rome to Naples in 1 hour 10 minutes, and Rome to Florence in 1 hour 30 minutes. Book early for fares from EUR 19.

Intercity and Sprinter trains run directly to Schiphol Plaza (the station is inside the terminal) from Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). The Intercity Direct from Rotterdam takes 43 minutes (€17.40 with supplement). Trains from The Hague take 35–45 minutes.

Taxis from central Amsterdam cost €35–50 and take 20–35 minutes. Highway A4 is frequently congested during morning rush. Bus 397 runs from Amsterdam Leidseplein to Schiphol (30 min, €5.50) for a cheaper landside alternative.

Leonardo Express to Roma Termini (32 min, €14) departs from inside the terminal every 30 minutes. Regional FL1 trains cost €8 and serve Trastevere, Ostiense, and Tiburtina; useful if your accommodation is near those stations.Official taxis (white, metered) from FCO to central Rome (within the Aurelian Walls) have a fixed €50 fare regardless of traffic. Agree on the fixed rate before departure. Ciampino (CIA) handles Ryanair and some charter flights; it is 40 minutes east of Rome by bus and a completely separate airport.

Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry (28–36°C, June–August) with little rain and intense sunshine. Heat rarely disrupts flights but can make the terminal uncomfortable. Winters are mild (5–13°C) with rain primarily from November through February. Snow in Rome is rare, occurring once every few years, but when it falls the city and airport are largely unprepared. Even light accumulations cause significant disruption.

Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons (15–23°C). Sirocco winds from the Sahara occasionally bring warm dusty air and reduced visibility in spring. FCO has little fog risk and generally good flying weather compared to northern European hubs.
