Most packing lists are either too long (you don't need 12 categories of items for a weekend trip) or too generic to be useful. This list focuses on what actually matters: the stuff you'll regret forgetting and the stuff that makes travel easier.
The Non-Negotiables
Forget these and your trip gets complicated:
- ID and boarding pass (screenshot your boarding pass as backup)
- Phone and charger
- Wallet with cards and some cash
- Any prescription medications (in original containers, in your personal item)
- Keys (unless someone's watching your place)
Everything else is replaceable at your destination. Expensive and annoying, but replaceable.
Carry-On Bag (Overhead Bin)
This is your main luggage for short trips, or your backup if checked bags get lost.
Clothes (3-day trip example):
- 3 tops, 1 bottom (most bottoms can be worn multiple days)
- 3-4 underwear and socks
- 1 versatile layer (jacket, cardigan, or hoodie)
- Sleepwear (or just wear an old t-shirt)
- Shoes you're wearing + 1 pair max
Packing tip: Roll clothes instead of folding. It saves space and reduces wrinkles. Pack the heaviest items at the bottom (near the wheels) so the bag stands upright.
Toiletries (remember the 3-1-1 rule):
- Toothbrush and travel toothpaste
- Deodorant (solid, not aerosol)
- Face wash, moisturizer (3.4oz or less)
- Shampoo/conditioner (or plan to use hotel's)
- Contact solution and case (if applicable)
- Any skincare you can't skip
Put all liquids in a single quart-sized clear bag before you get to the airport. Digging through your carry-on at security is not fun.
Electronics:
- Laptop (if needed)
- Chargers for everything (phone, laptop, headphones)
- Headphones or earbuds
- Portable battery pack (must go in carry-on, not checked)
- Adapters if traveling internationally
Personal Item (Under Seat)
This stays with you during the flight. Pack for access, not storage.
- Wallet, phone, ID, boarding pass
- Headphones
- Medications (anything you'd need if your carry-on got gate-checked)
- Snacks (airport food is expensive and airplane food is... airplane food)
- Entertainment (book, tablet, downloaded shows)
- Empty water bottle (fill after security)
- Pen (for customs forms on international flights)
- Gum or mints (helps with ear pressure)
Comfort Items Worth the Space
These aren't essential, but they make flights noticeably better:
- Neck pillow (only if you can actually sleep on planes)
- Eye mask (blocks the overhead light from the person who won't turn it off)
- Earplugs (backup for when headphones die)
- Compression socks (for flights over 4 hours, helps with swelling)
- Lip balm and hand lotion (cabin air is extremely dry)
- A light scarf or wrap (planes are either freezing or stifling, never comfortable)
What Not to Pack in Carry-On
Either check these or leave them home:
- Large liquids (anything over 3.4oz that isn't medication)
- Sharp objects (scissors over 4 inches, knives of any size)
- Wrapped gifts (TSA will unwrap them)
- Valuable jewelry (wear it or leave it, don't pack it loose)
- Expensive items you'd be devastated to lose (carry-ons get gate-checked sometimes)
Packing for Connections and Delays
If you have a tight connection or are flying during bad weather season, pack assuming your checked bag might not make it:
- One full change of clothes in your carry-on
- All medications in your personal item
- Chargers with you, not in checked luggage
- Essential toiletries in carry-on (you can buy more, but not at midnight)
Quick Checklist Format
Copy this to your phone before you pack:
Must have:
- ☐ ID (check REAL ID compliance)
- ☐ Phone + charger
- ☐ Wallet + cards + cash
- ☐ Medications
- ☐ Boarding pass (screenshot saved)
Carry-on bag:
- ☐ Clothes (packed in outfit sets)
- ☐ Toiletries in quart bag
- ☐ Electronics + chargers
- ☐ One change of clothes (if checking a bag)
Personal item:
- ☐ Headphones
- ☐ Snacks
- ☐ Entertainment
- ☐ Empty water bottle
- ☐ Pen (international flights)
Before You Leave
Quick house check:
- Thermostat adjusted
- Lights on timers or off
- No perishable food that will spoil
- Trash taken out
- Doors and windows locked
- Someone knows your travel dates (neighbor, friend, family)
The goal isn't to pack everything you might need. It's to pack what you'll definitely need and know you can handle the rest. Airports and destinations have stores. You'll survive without that fourth pair of shoes.
