Warsaw to Amsterdam (WAW–AMS) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Polish passport holders enter the Netherlands freely as EU citizens. No visa, no time limit on stays. Bring your Polish passport or national ID card (both work). The Netherlands is in the Schengen area, so flights from Poland have no passport control on arrival. Bring your ID for airline boarding.

For stays beyond 3 months, register at the local municipality (gemeente) to get a BSN (Burgerservicenummer), which you need for employment, banking, and healthcare. Registration requires proof of address (rental contract or host letter). EU citizens can live and work in the Netherlands without a work permit. The registration process takes about 2 weeks.

Direct flights from Warsaw to Amsterdam Schiphol run about 2 hours 15 minutes on KLM, LOT Polish Airlines, and Wizz Air. Krakow, Wroclaw, and Gdansk also have direct service to Amsterdam. The Netherlands uses the euro. At current rates, EUR 1 equals roughly PLN 4.30. No mandatory vaccinations. The OV-chipkaart (EUR 7.50 for an anonymous card) works on all Dutch trains, buses, trams, and metros. A large Polish community lives in the Netherlands (over 200,000), making it easy to find Polish shops, churches, and social networks in cities like Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague, and Eindhoven.

SKM (Szybka Kolej Miejska) commuter rail Line S2/S3 connects Warsaw Central (Warszawa Centralna) to WAW in 25 minutes (PLN 4.40 within Zone 1, or PLN 7.00 including Zone 2). Trains depart roughly every 15–30 minutes. The platform is directly below the terminal; no bus transfer needed.Bus lines 175, 188, and N32 (night) serve the city center for PLN 4.40. Taxis cost PLN 40–60 from the center (20–30 min). Uber and Bolt (dominant ride-share in Poland) run PLN 30–50. Parking from PLN 30/day in the remote car park.

Trains depart directly from inside the terminal (Schiphol Plaza) to Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). Direct intercity trains also serve Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and Eindhoven without requiring transfers. NS Hispeed connects to Brussels (1h 50m) and Paris CDG (3h 20m).

Taxis use a meter; Amsterdam Centraal costs €35–50. Ride-hail apps (Uber, Bolt) are cheaper at €25–40. Car rental agencies are at the terminal. Bus 397 to Leidseplein is the budget option (€5.50).

Temperate maritime climate, mild and frequently overcast year-round. Winters are cold (0–7°C) with regular rain and occasional snow or freezing fog. AMS handles de-icing efficiently but heavy snowfall (rare) causes cascading delays across the network. Fog is the primary winter disruption risk, particularly November through February.

Summers are warm (17–24°C) with long days and moderate rain. Thunderstorms in July–August cause brief but sharp delays. Strong crosswinds from the North Sea affect small aircraft year-round. Pack a waterproof layer regardless of season.
