New York to Stockholm (JFK–ARN) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

US passport holders enter Sweden visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen area. No advance application is needed. Sweden is an EU member and Schengen member. Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area. At Stockholm Arlanda (ARN) or Gothenburg Landvetter (GOT), immigration stamps your passport at the non-EU line.

The 90-day Schengen clock runs across all Schengen countries. Sweden borders Norway and Finland, both Schengen members with free movement across borders. The Oresund Bridge connects Malmo to Copenhagen, Denmark, in 35 minutes by train. Stockholm's Gamla Stan (Old Town), the Vasa Museum, and the ABBA Museum draw visitors year-round. Swedish Lapland above the Arctic Circle offers the Northern Lights from September through March and midnight sun from late May through mid-July.

Direct flights from New York JFK and Newark to Stockholm run about 8 hours on SAS and United. Seasonal nonstop service operates from Miami and Los Angeles. Sweden uses the Swedish krona (SEK), trading at roughly 10.5 SEK per $1. Sweden is one of the world's most cashless societies: card and mobile payments work everywhere, including street vendors and public toilets. Cash is rarely needed and some businesses do not accept it. The Arlanda Express train runs from ARN to Stockholm Central in 20 minutes for SEK 299 ($28.50). SL transit cards cover Stockholm's metro, buses, and ferries at SEK 42 ($4) per single trip or SEK 200 ($19) for a 72-hour pass. Restaurant meals cost SEK 150 to SEK 300 ($14.30 to $28.60).

The AirTrain connects JFK to the NYC subway and Long Island Rail Road at Jamaica Station (Howard Beach is the other connection point). Subway fare plus AirTrain totals $9.25 from midtown Manhattan; allow 60–75 minutes. LIRR from Penn Station takes 25–30 minutes to Jamaica, then 8–10 minutes on AirTrain; total fare around $10–15 depending on time of day.Taxis from Manhattan to JFK are a flat rate of $70 plus tolls and tip ($85–95 all-in). Ride-shares cost $45–80 depending on traffic and time of day. A dedicated express rail (JFK Connect) has been proposed but does not exist yet.

Arlanda Express (SEK 280–320) to Stockholm Central in 18 minutes. Departures every 15 minutes from platforms in the terminal. The Pendeltåg (SEK 145 including airport supplement) takes 40 minutes and departs from Arlanda Central station, a short walk or free shuttle from the terminals.Taxis to central Stockholm: SEK 600–800. Uber: SEK 400–600. Several rental car brands operate from ARN. Flygbussarna coaches serve Uppsala (1h, SEK 120) and other regional cities. The airport is 45km north of Stockholm.

Subarctic maritime climate. Winters (December–February) are cold at −7–2°C with reliable snowfall. ARN is well-equipped for winter operations with heated jet bridges and continuous de-icing capability, but major snowstorms still cause delays. Daylight is very limited. December averages fewer than 7 hours.

Summers (June–August) are mild and long at 18–24°C with up to 19 hours of daylight. Operations are very stable. Fog can form on calm, clear autumn nights (September–November). Spring snow in April is not unusual. Pack thermal layers for any winter visit.
