Travel Essentials
IAH: CDT · DFW: CDT
When it's 6:00 PM in Houston, it's 6:00 PM in Dallas-Fort Worth.
IAH has no direct rail link to downtown Houston. The IAH Express bus runs from Houston Amtrak/Greyhound station via Park & Ride to Terminal C (60–90 min, $1.25 with METRO Q card). This is the only transit option; Houston's rail network does not reach the airport.Taxis from downtown Houston cost $50–70 and take 40–60 minutes. Ride-hails (Uber, Lyft) are typically $35–55. IAH sits 23 miles north of downtown on the North Freeway (I-45); traffic is heavy during morning and evening rush. Remote economy parking lots serve all terminals via shuttle.
DART Orange Line runs to downtown Dallas (50 min, $3). TEXRail reaches downtown Fort Worth in 55 minutes ($2.50). Taxis and ride-shares cost $25–45 to either city center.Rental car facilities are at the south end. All terminals connect via the free Skylink train; this is an airside-only connection, so you must clear security first to use it.
Hot continental climate. Summers are intensely hot (35–40°C) with little rain. Winters are mild (3–12°C) but ice storms hit 2–3 times per year, causing major airport disruptions.
Spring (March–May) brings severe thunderstorms and tornado risk that regularly ground flights. Fall is the best travel window with moderate temperatures and low storm frequency.

Frequently Asked Questions
IAH to DFW Route Overview
Houston George Bush Intercontinental to Dallas/Fort Worth is a connecting-utility route that exists primarily to link United's IAH hub with American's DFW hub. United operates the IAH end; American operates sporadic service as well. Combined frequency is 8-12 daily round trips. Flight time is 1 hour 5 minutes. Aircraft are exclusively regional jets: Embraer 175s operated by regional affiliates. The market is dominated by connecting passengers rather than O&D traffic.
Connection and Operational Patterns
The two cities are well within driving distance, so the air route survives primarily on the strength of connecting traffic and corporate travelers unwilling to drive. United's IAH hub feeds passengers from Latin America, the Gulf Coast, and international arrivals to DFW for American connections, and vice versa. This inter-hub routing is unusual and reflects the geographic reality that both Houston and Dallas have major international hubs 380 km apart. Gulf Coast convective weather affects both airports simultaneously during spring and fall, making IAH-DFW one of the routes with the highest likelihood of mutual-airport ground stops in the US network.
