Frankfurt am Main to Los Angeles (FRA–LAX) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

German passport holders travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) for stays up to 90 days. You must apply for ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) at esta.cbp.dhs.gov before departure. ESTA costs USD 21, is valid for 2 years, and approval usually comes within minutes. Apply at least 72 hours before travel in case of delays.

ESTA requires a machine-readable passport. If your German passport was issued after 2005 it qualifies. You need a return or onward ticket. The 90-day limit is strict and cannot be extended. Leaving to Canada, Mexico, or the Caribbean does not reset the clock. If you overstay even by one day, your ESTA is voided and future entries require a full visa interview at the US Embassy.

CBP officers at the US port of entry make the final admission decision. They may ask about your travel purpose, accommodation, and ties to Germany. Honest, brief answers work best. Global Entry membership (USD 100, 5-year validity) speeds up the arrival process at most major US airports through automated kiosks.

S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 run from Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (main station) to Terminal 1 every 15 minutes (15 min, €5.65 single or included in a Frankfurt day ticket). ICE and IC long-distance trains serve the airport's own long-distance station (Fernbahnhof); this is separate from the S-Bahn Regional station and connects Frankfurt to Cologne, Stuttgart, Munich, and other cities without requiring travel through the city centre.Taxis from the city centre cost €25–35 and take 15–25 minutes. Terminal 2 connects to Terminal 1 via the free SkyLine people mover.

LAX has no direct rail link to downtown. The closest option is the free LAX Shuttle G to the Metro C Line station at Aviation/Century Blvd (fare $1.75 to Union Station, 40–50 min). Taxis use a meter; expect $35–55 to downtown and $30–45 to Santa Monica. Ride-shares cost $20–45 depending on destination and surge pricing.Rental car facilities are a short shuttle ride from terminals. FlyAway buses run to Union Station, Van Nuys, Hollywood, and Westwood ($9.75–11.25). For LAX Connect (the new people mover to Inglewood), check if it has opened at time of travel.

Mediterranean climate. Summers are warm and dry (24–30°C) with low humidity and almost no rain. Winters are mild (10–18°C) with occasional rain from November through March. Fog ("June Gloom") is common from late May through July, blanketing mornings until noon and causing departure delays.

Santa Ana winds occur in fall and spring, sometimes grounding departures briefly. Heat waves in September–October can push temperatures above 38°C inland, though LAX itself stays cooler near the coast.
