Warsaw to Vienna (WAW–VIE) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Polish passport holders enter Austria freely as fellow EU and Schengen citizens. No visa, no border control on flights from Poland, no time limit on stays. A valid Polish passport or national ID card (dowod osobisty) is sufficient. Both countries are in the Schengen zone, so flights between them are treated as domestic, with no immigration formalities.

Direct flights from Warsaw Chopin (WAW) to Vienna (VIE) take about 1 hour 25 minutes on LOT and Austrian Airlines. Wizz Air and Ryanair serve the route from Warsaw Modlin (WMI) and Krakow (KRK). From Krakow to Vienna is about 1 hour 10 minutes. The train is also a strong option: Warsaw to Vienna runs about 7 hours on PKP Intercity/OBB nightjet, and Krakow to Vienna takes about 5 hours 30 minutes.

Austria uses the euro. No currency exchange needed for travelers from the eurozone, though Poland uses the zloty, so exchange PLN to EUR before departure or withdraw euros from ATMs in Austria. ATM fees vary by bank, but Euronet ATMs (common at airports and tourist spots) charge high fees, so use local bank ATMs instead. Card payments work everywhere. No mandatory vaccinations. Vienna's City Airport Train (CAT) runs from VIE to Wien Mitte station in 16 minutes for EUR 14.90 one-way. The cheaper S-Bahn (S7 line) takes 25 minutes for EUR 4.40.

SKM (Szybka Kolej Miejska) commuter rail Line S2/S3 connects Warsaw Central (Warszawa Centralna) to WAW in 25 minutes (PLN 4.40 within Zone 1, or PLN 7.00 including Zone 2). Trains depart roughly every 15–30 minutes. The platform is directly below the terminal; no bus transfer needed.Bus lines 175, 188, and N32 (night) serve the city center for PLN 4.40. Taxis cost PLN 40–60 from the center (20–30 min). Uber and Bolt (dominant ride-share in Poland) run PLN 30–50. Parking from PLN 30/day in the remote car park.

The S7 commuter rail runs to Wien Mitte in 30–35 minutes (€4.20 every 30 minutes). The CAT (City Airport Train) is faster at 16 minutes (€14.90) and includes a city check-in facility at Wien Mitte.Taxis to the center cost €35–45 metered. Rental car desks are in the arrivals hall. The Vienna City Card covers all S-Bahn travel and is worth buying if you plan to use public transit throughout your stay.

Continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. July and August average 25–30°C with occasional thunderstorms. Winter (December–February) brings temperatures of −5–4°C. Snow and freezing fog are the main disruption risks at VIE, typically causing delays rather than cancellations.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are mild at 10–20°C. Föhn winds in spring can cause turbulence on approaches. Pack layers year-round. Mornings and evenings can be significantly cooler than afternoons.
