The 30-day visa-free stay can be extended at any Bureau of Immigration office for up to 36 months total without leaving the country. Each extension costs PHP 3,030 to PHP 4,410 ($52 to $76) depending on the length. The first extension adds 29 days. The Philippines has 7,641 islands. Palawan (underground river in Puerto Princesa, El Nido, Coron), Boracay (White Beach), Cebu (whale sharks in Oslob, Kawasan Falls), and Siargao (surfing at Cloud 9) are the top destinations. Domestic flights connect 80+ airports: Manila to Cebu takes 1 hour 20 minutes, Manila to Puerto Princesa takes 1 hour 15 minutes.

Direct flights from Los Angeles (LAX) to Manila run about 14 hours 30 minutes on Philippine Airlines. San Francisco to MNL runs about 14 hours on Philippine Airlines and United. Direct service also operates from New York JFK, Guam, and Honolulu. The Philippines uses the Philippine peso (PHP), trading at roughly 58 PHP per $1. GCash and Maya are the dominant digital wallets, usable at stores, restaurants, and for transport. Grab operates in Manila, Cebu, and other cities. Jeepneys (repurposed military jeeps) are the main urban transport at PHP 13 ($0.22) minimum fare. Tricycles (motorcycle taxis with sidecars) handle short hops for PHP 20 to PHP 50. A meal at a local carinderia (food stall) costs PHP 60 to PHP 120 ($1 to $2).

Link Light Rail runs from downtown Seattle (Westlake station) to the airport in 38 minutes ($3.50 peak). Trains run every 6–12 minutes during peak hours from 5am to 1am. Ride-shares run $30–50 from downtown; SR-99 and I-5 can be heavily congested southbound during afternoon rush (3–7pm).

Sound Transit 574 express bus serves Tacoma ($2.50–4). Sounder commuter rail connects Tacoma to the airport area via a shuttle.

Metered yellow taxis depart from each terminal's designated taxi queue; flag fall ₱70 plus meter. Confirm the driver uses the meter before entering; insist on it. Grab (Philippines ride-share) is a reliable alternative at ₱200–450 to Makati or BGC.Terminal 1, 2, 3, and 4 are not connected by a common transit link; confirm which terminal you arrive at well in advance. To BGC: ₱200–350, 20–40 min off-peak. To Manila Hotel area: ₱150–200, 30–60 min. Rental cars are available but driving in Manila is not recommended for the unfamiliar.

Tropical climate with a pronounced wet season (June–November) and dry season (December–May). The wet season brings typhoons. MNL experiences some of the highest disruption rates of any major hub during this period. Cancellations and long delays are common when typhoons make landfall in Luzon.

Temperatures year-round range 25–35°C. The hot dry season (March–May) is uncomfortable but operationally stable. December through February is the most pleasant period at 24–30°C with low humidity. Monsoon rains cause frequent flooding on approach roads from June through October. Add extra ground transport time during this period.
