Japanese passport holders enter Brunei visa-free for up to 14 days. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. You need a return or onward ticket and proof of sufficient funds (no fixed threshold). Extensions are not possible under the visa-free entry; for longer stays, apply for a visa at a Brunei diplomatic mission before travel.

At immigration at Brunei International Airport (BWN), you receive a stamp allowing 14 days. Have your hotel booking and return ticket ready. If arriving overland from Sarawak (Malaysia), the same 14-day visa-free terms apply at land borders. Multiple entries within the same trip are allowed if you re-enter from Sarawak (common when driving between Brunei's two non-contiguous territories).

No direct flights connect Japan to Brunei. Route through Kuala Lumpur (2 hours 30 minutes to BWN on Royal Brunei Airlines or AirAsia), Singapore, or Manila. Total travel time from Tokyo runs 9 to 14 hours. Brunei uses the Brunei dollar (BND), pegged 1:1 to the Singapore dollar, and SGD is accepted everywhere. No mandatory vaccinations. Alcohol is banned in Brunei. You can import up to 2 bottles of liquor and 12 cans of beer for personal consumption (declare at customs), but drinking in public is prohibited.

The Narita Express (N'EX) runs from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport in 60 minutes, with stops at Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Yokohama (¥3,070 one-way from Tokyo; discounted round-trip tickets available). Keisei Skyliner from Ueno takes 41 minutes to Terminal 1 (¥2,570); the faster option from east-side Tokyo. Keisei Limited Express is slower (80 min) but cheaper at ¥1,290.Limousine buses depart from major Tokyo hotels and stations for ¥3,200 and take 75–105 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis are extremely expensive (¥20,000–30,000+); avoid unless cost is no concern. The airport is 60 km from central Tokyo.
