Travel Essentials
MEX: CST · LGA: EDT
When it's 6:00 PM in Mexico City, it's 8:00 PM in New York.
Mexican passport holders need a B1/B2 visa to enter the United States. The visa is obtained through a US embassy or consulate and requires an in-person interview. B1/B2 visas are typically issued for 10 years with stays of up to 6 months per entry.
For land crossings within the border zone, a Border Crossing Card (BCC) is an alternative. The BCC costs USD 185 and is valid for 10 years. It allows entry up to 25 miles from the border in Texas and California, or 55 miles in New Mexico and Arizona. Travel by air or beyond the border zone requires a full B1/B2 visa with a valid passport.
Mexico City Metro Line B runs from Buenavista station to Pantitlán, then transfer to Line 5 to Terminal Aérea (Terminal 1); total about 45–60 minutes (MXN$7). Metrobús Line 4 connects Buenavista to the airport more directly (MXN$12, 30–40 min). Both are safe and reliable for travelers with minimal luggage.Authorized airport taxis (Taxi Ejecutivo or TICO) must be purchased inside the terminal; do not take street taxis. Rates to the Zona Rosa/Centro are MXN$200–300. Uber is permitted from city to airport. The airport is just 5km from the Zócalo but traffic can make the journey 30–60 minutes.
Taxis from LGA to Midtown Manhattan cost $30–45 (flat rates do not apply from LGA; metered). Ride-shares pickup is on the lower level; fares to Midtown typically $35–55. Allow 30–60 minutes off-peak, 60–90 minutes during rush hour. The M60 Select Bus ($2.90) connects to the subway at multiple points and takes 45–70 minutes to Manhattan. Q70 Select Bus connects to the 7/E/F/M/R trains at Jackson Heights for additional subway access. Note that LGA has no direct subway or rail link as of 2026.
Humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. LGA is one of the most disruption-prone major US airports. A combination of weather (nor'easters, summer thunderstorms, winter ice) and congested airspace drives delays year-round. Summer (June–August) afternoon thunderstorms cause frequent ground delays and can back up the eastern seaboard for hours.
Winter (December–February) brings snow and freezing rain events, with −5–4°C averages. Nor'easters typically cause 1–2 significant cancellation events per season. Spring and autumn are the most operationally stable periods. Connections through LGA require buffer time to absorb accumulated delays.
