Frequently Asked Questions
Mexico City to Cancun: High-Frequency Domestic Corridor
MEX-CUN is one of Mexico's most-flown domestic pairs, with Aeromexico, Volaris, and Vivaaerobus together operating 15 to 20 daily nonstops. Block time is two hours. The route serves a mix of leisure travelers heading to the Caribbean coast and business passengers with meetings in Cancun's growing convention and financial services sector. Cancun International handles 10 to 12 million passengers annually across four terminals; domestic arrivals use Terminal 3 or 4 depending on carrier. Mexico City's AICM (Benito Juarez International) runs two physically separate terminals connected by shuttle bus. A second Mexico City airport, Felipe Angeles International (NLU), is an option for some passengers but does not yet have MEX-CUN nonstops from major carriers at comparable frequency.
Carrier and Fare Structure
Vivaaerobus and Volaris are ultra-low-cost carriers (ULCCs) that charge separately for checked bags, seat selection, and carry-on bags over a personal item. Aeromexico includes more in base fares on this route but prices are generally higher. Round-trip fares on the MEX-CUN pair typically range from 900 to 4,500 MXN depending on advance purchase and carrier. Holiday periods, particularly Semana Santa and December, see fare spikes and the route fills well in advance. Aeromexico operates this route with ERJ-190s, Boeing 737s, or A320-family aircraft depending on the rotation.
