Lisbon to Vienna (LIS–VIE) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Portuguese passport holders enter Austria freely as EU citizens. No visa, no time limit on stays. Bring your Portuguese passport or Cartao de Cidadao (national ID card). Austria is in both the EU and the Schengen area, so flights from Portugal are intra-Schengen with no passport control on arrival.

For stays beyond 3 months, register at the local Meldeamt (registration office) within 3 days of moving in. You need proof of address (rental contract or Meldezettel signed by your landlord). This is mandatory for all residents, not just foreigners. The registration certificate (Anmeldebescheinigung) for EU citizens costs EUR 15 and is obtained at the MA 35 office in Vienna or the equivalent Bezirkshauptmannschaft outside Vienna. EU citizens can live and work in Austria without a work permit.

Direct flights from Lisbon to Vienna run about 3 hours 30 minutes on TAP, Austrian Airlines, Wizz Air, and Ryanair. Porto to Vienna runs about 3 hours 45 minutes. Austria uses the euro, same as Portugal, so no currency exchange needed. No mandatory vaccinations. Vienna's Wiener Linien card covers U-Bahn, trams, and buses at EUR 2.40 per single ticket or EUR 8 for a 24-hour pass. The Klimaticket (EUR 1,095 per year) covers all public transport in Austria. Vienna is consistently ranked among Europe's most livable cities, with rent running EUR 800 to EUR 1,200 for a one-bedroom in central districts.

Metro Red Line runs from downtown Lisbon (Alameda, Oriente) to the airport in 20–25 minutes (€1.85 single, or €0.48 on a Viva Viagem card). Trains run from 6:30am to 1am. The airport has its own station (Aeroporto) at the end of the Red Line.

Taxis from central Lisbon cost €10–15 and take 15–20 minutes with no traffic. Uber and Bolt are widely available at similar or lower prices. AeroBus (Carris) is slower (30–40 min) but cheaper at €4.

The S7 commuter rail runs to Wien Mitte in 30–35 minutes (€4.20 every 30 minutes). The CAT (City Airport Train) is faster at 16 minutes (€14.90) and includes a city check-in facility at Wien Mitte.Taxis to the center cost €35–45 metered. Rental car desks are in the arrivals hall. The Vienna City Card covers all S-Bahn travel and is worth buying if you plan to use public transit throughout your stay.

Continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. July and August average 25–30°C with occasional thunderstorms. Winter (December–February) brings temperatures of −5–4°C. Snow and freezing fog are the main disruption risks at VIE, typically causing delays rather than cancellations.

Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) are mild at 10–20°C. Föhn winds in spring can cause turbulence on approaches. Pack layers year-round. Mornings and evenings can be significantly cooler than afternoons.
