Lisbon to Dubai (LIS–DXB) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Portuguese passport holders enter the UAE visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. At Dubai International (DXB) or Abu Dhabi (AUH), you go to the smart gates (available for EU passport holders) or the standard immigration counter and receive an entry stamp. Processing takes minutes.

The 90-day visa-free stay replaced the older 30-day scheme in 2023 for EU nationals. No return ticket is formally required, but airlines may check before boarding. For stays beyond 90 days, you need a residence visa sponsored by an employer or through the freelancer/investor visa programs. The UAE has no income tax, which makes it attractive for Portuguese remote workers and entrepreneurs.

Direct flights from Lisbon to Dubai run about 7 hours on Emirates and TAP Air Portugal. Direct flights from Lisbon to Abu Dhabi run about 7 hours 30 minutes on Wizz Air Abu Dhabi. The UAE uses the UAE dirham (AED), pegged at 3.67 AED per $1, or about 3.40 AED per EUR 1. Card payments work everywhere. No mandatory vaccinations. The Dubai Metro Red and Green lines cost AED 3 to AED 8.50 per trip on a Nol card (AED 25 for the silver card including AED 19 credit). Abu Dhabi's bus network costs AED 2 per ride on a Hafilat card. Taxis are metered in both emirates.

Metro Red Line runs from downtown Lisbon (Alameda, Oriente) to the airport in 20–25 minutes (€1.85 single, or €0.48 on a Viva Viagem card). Trains run from 6:30am to 1am. The airport has its own station (Aeroporto) at the end of the Red Line.

Taxis from central Lisbon cost €10–15 and take 15–20 minutes with no traffic. Uber and Bolt are widely available at similar or lower prices. AeroBus (Carris) is slower (30–40 min) but cheaper at €4.

Metro Red Line from T1 (Airport Terminal 1 station) or T3 (Airport Terminal 3 station) to central Dubai. BurJuman: 20 min; Dubai Mall/Burj Khalifa: 23 min. Fare is AED 6.50–10. Metro runs from 5:30am; early morning arrivals may need to wait. T2 is not served by metro; RTA buses run to Al Ghubaiba (Bus 402) for AED 3.Taxis from DXB to Downtown Dubai cost AED 35–55 (airport taxi surcharge applies). Careem and Uber operate from designated zones. Ride-hails must be booked via app; street hailing is not permitted in terminal areas.

Desert climate, hot, dry, and sunny virtually year-round. Summers (June–September) are extreme: 38–48°C with high humidity near the coast. Heat stress slows ground operations but rarely causes weather cancellations. Winter (December–February) is DXB's peak season at 18–28°C with minimal rain and near-constant sunshine.

Occasional sandstorms (haboob) reduce visibility sharply and can ground flights for hours, most likely in spring (April–May) and summer. Light rain falls in winter and can cause road flooding on Dubai's drainage-limited road network. A light jacket is sufficient for winter evenings.
