Istanbul to New Delhi (IST–DEL) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Turkish passport holders need a visa to enter India. The e-visa is available at indianvisaonline.gov.in. The e-Tourist visa costs $25 for 30 days or $40 for 1 year (multiple entry, 90 days per visit). The 5-year e-Tourist visa costs $80. Apply at least 4 working days before travel. You receive the e-visa approval by email. Print it and present it at immigration. The e-visa is valid at 28 designated international airports including Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, and Kolkata. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry with at least two blank pages.

At the Indian airport, proceed to the e-visa immigration lane with your printed approval, passport, and return ticket. Biometrics (fingerprints and photo) are captured at the counter. For longer stays or work purposes, apply for a regular visa at the Indian Embassy in Ankara through the BLS International center. India also offers e-Business and e-Conference visas through the same online portal.

Direct flights from Istanbul (IST) to Delhi (DEL) run about 6 hours on Turkish Airlines and IndiGo. Istanbul to Mumbai (BOM) runs about 6 hours 30 minutes on Turkish Airlines and Air India. India uses the Indian rupee (INR), trading at roughly 2.6 INR per TRY 1. ATMs are common in cities. Card payments work at hotels, malls, and chain restaurants. UPI (Unified Payments Interface) dominates local transactions. Auto-rickshaws are the main short-distance transport: use Uber or Ola for metered rides. Delhi Metro costs INR 10 to INR 60 per ride (TRY 4 to TRY 23).

Istanbul Metro M11 Gayrettepe–İstanbul Havalimanı line connects the airport to the broader metro network; from Gayrettepe (Mecidiyeköy/Levent area) the journey is about 35 minutes (₺60–70 with Istanbulkart). The line runs roughly 5am to midnight.Havaist express buses serve Taksim, Kadıköy, and other major hubs (₺50–80, 45–90 minutes depending on traffic). Taxis use a meter; expect ₺400–600 from Taksim or Sultanahmet. The airport is 35km northwest of the city; traffic on the O-7 motorway can be severe during peak hours.

Airport Express Metro from T3 to New Delhi Railway Station (18–20 min, ₹60) runs 5am–11:30pm. T1 (domestic departures) has a free shuttle to T3 for the metro. Prepaid taxi booths in arrivals offer fixed fares; the New Delhi railway area is ₹400–600.Ola and Uber are reliable from DEL and often cheaper than prepaid taxis. Delhi traffic is severe; plan 60–90 minutes for surface transport during peak hours even though the airport is only 15 km from Connaught Place. NH-48 expressway provides the main access road.

Semi-arid climate with extreme seasonal variation. Summers (April–June) are extremely hot (38–46°C). Heat affects ground crew capacity but flights operate normally. Monsoon season (July–September) brings heavy rain and severe thunderstorms that frequently cause delays and diversions. Dust storms (andhi) precede monsoon onset in May–June and reduce visibility to near zero within minutes.

Dense fog is the most disruptive winter condition. December and January bring persistent cold fog (5–10°C with near-zero visibility) that can shut down operations for hours each morning. Delhi is one of the foggiest major airports in Asia during this period. Autumn (October–November) and spring (February–March) are the most flight-stable windows.
