Istanbul to Zaventem (IST–BRU) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Turkish passport holders need a Schengen visa to enter Belgium. Apply at the Belgian Embassy in Ankara, the Consulate General in Istanbul, or a TLScontact center. Belgium has a Turkish community of over 200,000 residents, primarily in Brussels, Antwerp, Ghent, and Liege. If visiting family, include the host's Belgian residence card copy and a signed invitation letter (attestation d'accueil from the commune). The Istanbul consulate handles a high volume of family visit applications. Apply at least 4 weeks before travel and earlier during summer months.

Direct flights from Istanbul (IST) to Brussels (BRU) run about 3 hours 15 minutes on Turkish Airlines and Brussels Airlines. Belgium uses the euro, trading at roughly 38 TRY per EUR 1. At Brussels Airport, the train to Brussels-Central takes 17 minutes for EUR 14.70 (TRY 558). A STIB/MIVB day pass for Brussels metro, tram, and bus costs EUR 8 (TRY 304). Ghent and Bruges are 30 to 60 minutes from Brussels by train at EUR 10 to EUR 16. Belgian frites from a frituur run EUR 3 to EUR 5 (TRY 114 to TRY 190).

Istanbul Metro M11 Gayrettepe–İstanbul Havalimanı line connects the airport to the broader metro network; from Gayrettepe (Mecidiyeköy/Levent area) the journey is about 35 minutes (₺60–70 with Istanbulkart). The line runs roughly 5am to midnight.Havaist express buses serve Taksim, Kadıköy, and other major hubs (₺50–80, 45–90 minutes depending on traffic). Taxis use a meter; expect ₺400–600 from Taksim or Sultanahmet. The airport is 35km northwest of the city; traffic on the O-7 motorway can be severe during peak hours.

The Airport Express train to Brussels Central takes 17 minutes (€11.80) and runs every 15–20 minutes from 05:30 to midnight. The platform is in the basement of the terminal building, no separate transfer needed.Taxis to central Brussels cost €40–55. For Ghent, direct trains run via Leuven (€20, 1h 10min). For Bruges, change at Brussels Midi (€22, 1h 30min total). Rental car desks are in the arrivals hall. Flixbus and other coach services connect from the airport to several European cities.

Temperate oceanic climate with mild, wet conditions year-round. Winters (December–February) are grey and damp at 1–7°C. Fog and freezing drizzle occasionally cause morning delays at BRU. Snow is possible but rarely heavy enough to close the airport.

Summers (June–August) are warm at 18–25°C with occasional thunderstorms. The airport sees its most operationally stable weather in spring (April–May) and early autumn (September). Pack waterproofs regardless of season. Brussels averages 160+ rain days per year.
