The fee is a EUR 16 bollo stamp. Bring proof of employment or self-employment, or proof of sufficient resources (roughly EUR 6,000 per year for a single person) plus health insurance. A codice fiscale (tax code) from the Agenzia delle Entrate is needed for any contract, SIM card, or bank account and can be obtained same-day.

Direct flights from Dublin to Rome run about 3 hours on Aer Lingus and Ryanair. Milan is about 2 hours 30 minutes. Seasonal and year-round routes cover Naples, Venice, Bologna, and Pisa. Italy uses the euro, so no currency exchange needed. No vaccination requirements. Irish driving licenses are valid for short stays. Residents must convert to an Italian license at the Motorizzazione within 1 year. Expect multi-week waits for codice fiscale and residency appointments in Rome and Milan.

Dublin Bus route 747 (Airlink) runs from the city centre (O'Connell Street) to the airport in 30–50 minutes, costing €7 one-way or €12 return. DART rail does not serve the airport directly; the nearest station requires a bus connection. Ride-shares from the city centre typically cost €20–35 depending on traffic.

The M50 and M1 motorways feed into the airport; short-term parking in Terminal 1 or 2 costs from €4/30 min, while long-stay lots (P3/P4) are significantly cheaper for multi-day trips. Allow extra time during morning and evening rush hours on the M50.

Malpensa Express trains depart Terminal 1 every 30 minutes to Milano Cadorna (45 min, €13) and Milano Centrale (52 min, €13). Terminal 2 passengers must take the free inter-terminal shuttle to reach the train. Taxis from Terminal 1 charge a fixed rate of around €100 to central Milan; pre-booked private transfers can be slightly cheaper.

Rental car desks are located in Terminal 1's arrivals area with a separate multi-storey car park. The A8 and A26 motorways give good access to the broader Lombardy and Piedmont regions.

Humid subtropical/continental climate on the Po Plain. Summers (June–August) are hot and muggy at 28–34°C, with afternoon thunderstorms that can produce short but sharp ground delays. Winters (November–February) are cold, damp, and foggy at 0–7°C. Fog is the most significant disruption risk and can persist for days, causing diversions to Turin or Bergamo.

Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant but bring variable rain. Po Valley fog is notoriously dense. Check conditions carefully for November through January travel.
