Amsterdam to Ferno (VA) (AMS–MXP) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Dutch passport holders enter Italy freely as EU citizens. No visa, no time limit on stays. Bring your Dutch passport or national ID card. Italy is in both the EU and the Schengen area, so flights from the Netherlands are intra-Schengen with no passport control on arrival. You need proof of employment, study enrollment, or sufficient funds (no fixed threshold for EU citizens). EU citizens can live and work in Italy without a work permit. Italy's bureaucracy can be slower than what you're used to in the Netherlands, so bring patience and all documents in duplicate.

Direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol to Rome Fiumicino run about 2 hours 30 minutes on KLM, ITA Airways, and Transavia. Direct flights also serve Milan, Venice, Naples, Bologna, Florence, Pisa, and Catania from Amsterdam and Eindhoven on KLM, Transavia, EasyJet, and Ryanair. Italy uses the euro, same as the Netherlands, so no currency exchange needed. No mandatory vaccinations. Trenitalia and Italo high-speed trains connect Rome to Milan in 2 hours 55 minutes, Rome to Naples in 1 hour 10 minutes, and Rome to Florence in 1 hour 30 minutes. Book early for fares from EUR 19.

Intercity and Sprinter trains run directly to Schiphol Plaza (the station is inside the terminal) from Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). The Intercity Direct from Rotterdam takes 43 minutes (€17.40 with supplement). Trains from The Hague take 35–45 minutes.

Taxis from central Amsterdam cost €35–50 and take 20–35 minutes. Highway A4 is frequently congested during morning rush. Bus 397 runs from Amsterdam Leidseplein to Schiphol (30 min, €5.50) for a cheaper landside alternative.

Malpensa Express trains depart Terminal 1 every 30 minutes to Milano Cadorna (45 min, €13) and Milano Centrale (52 min, €13). Terminal 2 passengers must take the free inter-terminal shuttle to reach the train. Taxis from Terminal 1 charge a fixed rate of around €100 to central Milan; pre-booked private transfers can be slightly cheaper.

Rental car desks are located in Terminal 1's arrivals area with a separate multi-storey car park. The A8 and A26 motorways give good access to the broader Lombardy and Piedmont regions.

Humid subtropical/continental climate on the Po Plain. Summers (June–August) are hot and muggy at 28–34°C, with afternoon thunderstorms that can produce short but sharp ground delays. Winters (November–February) are cold, damp, and foggy at 0–7°C. Fog is the most significant disruption risk and can persist for days, causing diversions to Turin or Bergamo.

Spring and autumn are mild and pleasant but bring variable rain. Po Valley fog is notoriously dense. Check conditions carefully for November through January travel.
