Irish passport holders enter the United States visa-free under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) for stays up to 90 days. The 90-day VWP stay cannot be extended and does not allow a change of immigration status. If you need more than 90 days, apply for a B-1/B-2 visa at the US Embassy in Dublin (MRV fee $185, interview wait times vary from 1 to 6 weeks).

Direct flights from Dublin to the US serve New York (JFK/EWR), Boston, Chicago, Washington Dulles, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and several others, running 7 to 10 hours. Shannon also has direct US routes. US Customs and Border Protection preclearance operates at Dublin and Shannon, meaning you clear US immigration before boarding and arrive as a domestic passenger. The US dollar is the only currency. No vaccination requirements for Irish arrivals.

Dublin Bus route 747 (Airlink) runs from the city centre (O'Connell Street) to the airport in 30–50 minutes, costing €7 one-way or €12 return. DART rail does not serve the airport directly; the nearest station requires a bus connection. Ride-shares from the city centre typically cost €20–35 depending on traffic.

The M50 and M1 motorways feed into the airport; short-term parking in Terminal 1 or 2 costs from €4/30 min, while long-stay lots (P3/P4) are significantly cheaper for multi-day trips. Allow extra time during morning and evening rush hours on the M50.

LAX has no direct rail link to downtown. The closest option is the free LAX Shuttle G to the Metro C Line station at Aviation/Century Blvd (fare $1.75 to Union Station, 40–50 min). Taxis use a meter; expect $35–55 to downtown and $30–45 to Santa Monica. Ride-shares cost $20–45 depending on destination and surge pricing.Rental car facilities are a short shuttle ride from terminals. FlyAway buses run to Union Station, Van Nuys, Hollywood, and Westwood ($9.75–11.25). For LAX Connect (the new people mover to Inglewood), check if it has opened at time of travel.

Mediterranean climate. Summers are warm and dry (24–30°C) with low humidity and almost no rain. Winters are mild (10–18°C) with occasional rain from November through March. Fog ("June Gloom") is common from late May through July, blanketing mornings until noon and causing departure delays.

Santa Ana winds occur in fall and spring, sometimes grounding departures briefly. Heat waves in September–October can push temperatures above 38°C inland, though LAX itself stays cooler near the coast.
