Dublin to Cancún (DUB–CUN) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Irish passport holders enter Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for the duration of the stay. At immigration, you receive a Forma Migratoria Multiple (FMM) entry card, either digitally via the INM website or on paper at the airport. The officer stamps your allowed days (up to 180). Check the number stamped, as officers sometimes write fewer days than the maximum. You can request 180 days if asked.

No supporting documents are required at the border, though a return ticket and hotel booking may be requested. The FMM paper must be kept and returned at departure. Losing it means a replacement fee of about MXN 600 (roughly $35) at the INM office before your flight. Extensions are not possible; overstays result in fines of about MXN 3,200 ($185) payable at the airport on departure.

No direct flights connect Dublin to Mexico. Connections through the US (Dallas, Houston, Chicago, New York) or through London, Madrid, or Amsterdam to Mexico City take 14 to 18 hours. An ESTA ($21, valid 2 years) or US transit visa is required if connecting through a US airport, even without leaving the terminal. Mexico uses the Mexican peso (MXN), trading at roughly 17 MXN per $1. No mandatory vaccinations. Tap water is not safe to drink throughout Mexico, so stick to bottled or purified water.

Dublin Bus route 747 (Airlink) runs from the city centre (O'Connell Street) to the airport in 30–50 minutes, costing €7 one-way or €12 return. DART rail does not serve the airport directly; the nearest station requires a bus connection. Ride-shares from the city centre typically cost €20–35 depending on traffic.

The M50 and M1 motorways feed into the airport; short-term parking in Terminal 1 or 2 costs from €4/30 min, while long-stay lots (P3/P4) are significantly cheaper for multi-day trips. Allow extra time during morning and evening rush hours on the M50.

Authorised airport taxis operate from a voucher desk inside each terminal. Fares to the Hotel Zone run MXN 350–550 (USD $17–28) and to downtown Cancún MXN 200–300. Purchase tickets inside before exiting to avoid touts. ADO buses depart from outside Terminal 2 to downtown Cancún for MXN 102 and continue to Playa del Carmen and Tulum.The Tren Maya connects Terminal 4 to Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the broader Yucatán Peninsula. Car rental desks are located in all terminals; driving is straightforward on Highway 307.

Tropical climate with two distinct seasons. Dry season (December–April) brings warm, sunny weather at 25–32°C with low humidity, the peak tourist season and most reliable flying conditions. Wet season (May–November) is hot, humid, and prone to heavy afternoon downpours; thunderstorms can cause short ground delays.

Hurricane season runs June through November, peaking in September–October. Major storms (e.g., Wilma 2005, Zeta 2020) can close the airport for 12–48 hours. Monitor forecasts carefully from August through October. September is statistically the highest-risk month.
