Amsterdam to Cancún (AMS–CUN) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Dutch passport holders enter Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. The immigration form (FMM, Forma Migratoria Multiple) is completed digitally at inm.gob.mx or on paper during the flight. You receive a stamped FMM on arrival. Keep this form safe because you must return it at departure. Losing it means paying a replacement fee of about MXN 600 (EUR 32) at a bank or immigration office before your exit flight.

At Mexico City (MEX), Cancun (CUN), Guadalajara (GDL), or any Mexican airport, immigration processing is fast for EU passport holders. No return ticket or accommodation proof is formally required. The immigration officer decides your allowed stay (up to 180 days) and writes it on the FMM. If you get fewer days than needed, you can request an extension at the nearest INM (National Migration Institute) office for free before your allotted days expire.

Direct flights from Amsterdam Schiphol to Mexico City run about 12 hours on KLM and Aeromexico (SkyTeam partners). KLM also flies direct to Cancun (about 10 hours 30 minutes). Mexico uses the Mexican peso (MXN), trading at roughly 18.5 MXN per EUR 1. ATMs are common but use bank ATMs inside branches to avoid skimming. Card payments work at most restaurants and shops. No mandatory vaccinations. Uber works in all major Mexican cities. Mexico City's metro costs MXN 5 (about EUR 0.27) per ride.

Intercity and Sprinter trains run directly to Schiphol Plaza (the station is inside the terminal) from Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). The Intercity Direct from Rotterdam takes 43 minutes (€17.40 with supplement). Trains from The Hague take 35–45 minutes.

Taxis from central Amsterdam cost €35–50 and take 20–35 minutes. Highway A4 is frequently congested during morning rush. Bus 397 runs from Amsterdam Leidseplein to Schiphol (30 min, €5.50) for a cheaper landside alternative.

Authorised airport taxis operate from a voucher desk inside each terminal. Fares to the Hotel Zone run MXN 350–550 (USD $17–28) and to downtown Cancún MXN 200–300. Purchase tickets inside before exiting to avoid touts. ADO buses depart from outside Terminal 2 to downtown Cancún for MXN 102 and continue to Playa del Carmen and Tulum.The Tren Maya connects Terminal 4 to Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the broader Yucatán Peninsula. Car rental desks are located in all terminals; driving is straightforward on Highway 307.

Tropical climate with two distinct seasons. Dry season (December–April) brings warm, sunny weather at 25–32°C with low humidity, the peak tourist season and most reliable flying conditions. Wet season (May–November) is hot, humid, and prone to heavy afternoon downpours; thunderstorms can cause short ground delays.

Hurricane season runs June through November, peaking in September–October. Major storms (e.g., Wilma 2005, Zeta 2020) can close the airport for 12–48 hours. Monitor forecasts carefully from August through October. September is statistically the highest-risk month.
