Hungarian passport holders enter Sweden freely as EU and Schengen citizens. No visa, no fee, no time limit on stays. A valid Hungarian national ID card or passport is sufficient. Both countries are in the Schengen Area, so flights between them have no systematic border control.

For stays beyond 3 months, register with the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) to obtain a personnummer (personal identity number). This requires proof of employment for at least 1 year (employment contract), or proof of self-employment, studies (with health insurance), or sufficient resources (roughly SEK 8,990 per month for 2024 to 2025). Without a personnummer, daily life in Sweden is difficult: no bank account, no phone contract, no access to public healthcare (except emergency). Processing takes 2 to 8 weeks.

Direct flights from Budapest to Stockholm run about 2 hours 20 minutes on Wizz Air and SAS. Sweden uses the Swedish krona (SEK), trading at roughly 11.2 SEK per EUR 1. Cash is nearly extinct in Sweden; many shops and restaurants refuse it entirely. Card and Swish (mobile payment app, requires a Swedish bank account) are the standard. No vaccination requirements. Hungarian driving licenses are valid for short stays; residents must exchange within 1 year.
