Frequently Asked Questions
Bangkok Suvarnabhumi to Koh Samui: Bangkok Airways' Monopoly Route
BKK-USM is one of the few scheduled airline routes in Asia with a formal single-carrier structure. Bangkok Airways built Koh Samui Airport in 1989 and holds the operating concession, making it the only airline permitted to fly scheduled service to USM. It operates 8 to 10 daily round trips using ATR 72-600 turboprops, with block time of 1 hour 15 minutes. The concession model means fares are substantially higher than comparable Thai domestic routes operated under competition. Passengers without the budget for BKK-USM often route through Surat Thani (URT) by air or overnight train, then take the ferry to Samui. That alternative adds 3 to 5 hours to the journey.
Koh Samui Airport and Bangkok Airways' Network
USM is a distinctive open-air airport with thatched-roof pavilions built by Bangkok Airways on a private concession. The design is intentionally low-capacity, limited to small turboprop aircraft. Bangkok Airways also connects Samui to Chiang Mai (CNX), Phuket (HKT), and select international points including Singapore and Hong Kong, all as extensions of the concession model. The free lounge access policy at BKK and USM is a genuine differentiator; passengers on the shortest, cheapest fare have the same lounge access as premium-class travellers. Suvarnabhumi's domestic gates for Bangkok Airways sit in the B concourse, separate from the international gates used by Thai Airways and other mainline carriers.
