Amsterdam to Orlando (AMS–MCO) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Dutch passport holders travel to the US under the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) using ESTA. Apply at esta.cbp.dhs.gov at least 72 hours before departure. ESTA costs USD 21 (about EUR 20), is valid for 2 years or until your passport expires, and allows multiple entries of up to 90 days each. Your passport must be machine-readable and have an electronic chip (all modern Dutch passports qualify). If ESTA is denied, you need a B-1/B-2 visa from the US Embassy in Amsterdam.

Direct flights from Amsterdam to the US are plentiful. KLM and Delta (joint venture partners) serve New York JFK (7 hours 45 minutes), Atlanta (9 hours 30 minutes), Los Angeles (11 hours), Chicago (8 hours 45 minutes), Boston (7 hours 30 minutes), Minneapolis, Salt Lake City, Portland, and more. United flies to Houston, Newark, Washington Dulles, and San Francisco from Schiphol. Total, around 12 US cities have nonstop Amsterdam service.

The US dollar (USD) trades at roughly EUR 0.93 per USD 1. Card payments work everywhere, and contactless is standard. No mandatory vaccinations. CBP processing at US airports takes 20 minutes to over an hour depending on the airport and time. Global Entry (USD 100, valid 5 years) gives automated kiosk access with much shorter lines. Apply through the CBP Trusted Traveler Programs website and schedule an interview at a US airport or the US pre-clearance facility at certain airports. Tipping is expected: 18 to 20% at restaurants, USD 1 to 2 per drink at bars.

Intercity and Sprinter trains run directly to Schiphol Plaza (the station is inside the terminal) from Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). The Intercity Direct from Rotterdam takes 43 minutes (€17.40 with supplement). Trains from The Hague take 35–45 minutes.

Taxis from central Amsterdam cost €35–50 and take 20–35 minutes. Highway A4 is frequently congested during morning rush. Bus 397 runs from Amsterdam Leidseplein to Schiphol (30 min, €5.50) for a cheaper landside alternative.

Brightline trains depart from Terminal C to Fort Lauderdale (3h, from $30) and Miami (3.5h, from $30); this is the only intercity rail option from the airport. For Walt Disney World or International Drive, ride-hails cost $25–40 and take 20–30 minutes. Mears Connect shuttle buses serve the major resort areas (from $16 per person).Taxis are metered and available at Ground Transportation. Rental car agencies are in the Terminal B intermodal center; accessible by Automated People Mover from both Terminal A and Terminal C. All five theme park areas offer resort shuttle services but these require pre-booking.

Subtropical climate, warm to hot year-round. Summer (June–September) is the most disruptive season: daily afternoon thunderstorms arrive with near-clockwork timing and frequently cause ground stops at MCO, often delaying 3–4pm banks of departures. Heat and humidity can top 35°C with heat index over 40°C. Lightning density in central Florida is among the highest in the United States.

Hurricane season (June–November) brings occasional tropical systems. Orlando sits far enough inland to avoid direct storm surge but tropical downpours cause significant disruption. Winters are mild (10–22°C) with low humidity and minimal rain. January–March is the most flight-stable period.
