Xianyang (Weicheng) to Sydney (Mascot) (XIY–SYD) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Chinese passport holders need a visa to enter Australia. The most common option is the Visitor visa (subclass 600), which costs AUD 190 and allows stays up to 3, 6, or 12 months. Apply online through immi.homeaffairs.gov.au. Processing takes 20 to 30 days for the tourist stream, but can be longer during busy periods.

Required documents include proof of funds, travel itinerary, employment letter, and bank statements. If you have family in Australia, an invitation letter helps. Australia also offers a 10-year frequent traveler visa (subclass 600) for Chinese nationals at AUD 1,085, with each stay capped at 3 months. All applicants may need to provide biometrics at the Australian Visa Application Centre in their city. Health examinations are required for stays over 3 months.

Xi'an Metro Line 14 opened in 2024 and connects Xi'an North (high-speed rail station) to T5 at Xianyang Airport in 30–35 minutes (¥6). This replaced the previous airport shuttle bus as the default transit option for most travelers. Line 14 also connects to Xi'an central via transfers at Xi'an North.Airport shuttle buses still serve the city centre and Bell Tower area (¥30, 50–70 min). Taxis from Xi'an Zhonglou (Bell Tower area) cost ¥80–120 and take 40–60 minutes on the G30 expressway. DiDi is widely used. The airport is 47 km northwest of the city centre.

Airport Link trains depart every 10 minutes to Central Station (13 min, AUD $20.10 with Opal). The station access fee makes this more expensive than typical Sydney transit. Taxis from International Terminal queue outside arrivals; metered fares to the CBD run AUD $45–65. Uber operates from a designated ride-share zone.Rental car companies have desks in both the international and domestic terminal precincts. A SkyBus operates to the CBD and several suburbs as a cheaper alternative to taxis (AUD $24–27).

Temperate oceanic climate. Summers (December–February) are warm and humid at 24–32°C with afternoon sea breezes and occasional severe thunderstorms that can cause extended ground stops. Winters (June–August) are mild and mostly dry at 8–17°C. Fog on winter mornings occasionally delays operations.

The airport faces its greatest disruption risk from summer thunderstorms and, less commonly, from east-coast lows bringing heavy rain and strong winds in autumn and winter. Pack layers for winter. Summer evenings can be surprisingly cool with sea breezes.
