Warsaw to Spata-Artemida (WAW–ATH) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Polish passport holders enter Greece freely as EU and Schengen zone citizens. No visa, no time limit, no border control. Bring your Polish passport or national ID card. Flights between Poland and Greece are intra-Schengen with no immigration checks on arrival.

For stays beyond 3 months, register at the local police station or municipality to obtain an EU citizen registration certificate (bebaiosi eggrafis). This is free and requires proof of employment, study, or sufficient funds. EU citizens can live and work in Greece without a permit. A Greek tax number (AFM) is needed for banking and rental contracts, obtainable at the local tax office (DOY) with your passport.

Direct flights from Warsaw to Athens run about 3 hours on LOT and Aegean Airlines. Seasonal routes from Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk, and Katowice serve Thessaloniki, Heraklion (Crete), Rhodes, Corfu, Zakynthos, and Santorini on Wizz Air, Ryanair, and charter airlines. Greece uses the euro, trading at roughly 4.3 PLN per EUR 1. Card payments work in cities and tourist areas, but carry cash for smaller islands, tavernas, and beach vendors. No mandatory vaccinations. Ferries from Athens Piraeus to the Cyclades cost EUR 30 to EUR 70 in economy (book at ferries.gr). Island-hopping by ferry runs on a seasonal schedule, with the widest selection from May to October.

SKM (Szybka Kolej Miejska) commuter rail Line S2/S3 connects Warsaw Central (Warszawa Centralna) to WAW in 25 minutes (PLN 4.40 within Zone 1, or PLN 7.00 including Zone 2). Trains depart roughly every 15–30 minutes. The platform is directly below the terminal; no bus transfer needed.Bus lines 175, 188, and N32 (night) serve the city center for PLN 4.40. Taxis cost PLN 40–60 from the center (20–30 min). Uber and Bolt (dominant ride-share in Poland) run PLN 30–50. Parking from PLN 30/day in the remote car park.

Metro Line 3 departs from the basement level of the terminal to central Athens every 30 minutes (€10, 40 min). Express buses X95 (Syntagma), X96 (Piraeus port), and X93 (long-distance bus terminal) run 24 hours a day for €6.20. Taxis queue outside arrivals with fixed rates: €40 to the city centre during the day, €55 at night and on public holidays. Meters still run but the flat rate applies if higher.Rental car desks are in the arrivals area. The airport is 33 km east of Athens via the Attiki Odos motorway (toll). Ferries to the Greek islands depart from Piraeus port; the X96 bus connects the airport to the port directly.

Mediterranean climate. Summers (June–August) are hot and dry at 30–38°C with intense sunshine and very little rain. Flying conditions are excellent. Summer heat can affect tarmac operations. The airport sits on a coastal plain exposed to the Meltemi northerly winds in July–August, which can cause turbulence on approach but rarely close the airport.

Winters (December–February) are mild and rainy at 8–14°C. Snow is rare in Athens but occasional. Thunderstorms in autumn (October–November) can produce sharp delays. ATH has among the most reliable flying conditions of any major European hub.
