Turkmenistan is one of the most restricted countries for tourism. Independent travel is not permitted: all tourists must be accompanied by a licensed guide for the duration of their stay. No direct flights connect the US to Turkmenistan. Route through Istanbul (about 4 hours 30 minutes to ASB on Turkish Airlines or Turkmenistan Airlines), Dubai (about 3 hours 30 minutes), or Moscow (about 4 hours on Turkmenistan Airlines). Total travel time from the US East Coast runs 16 to 24 hours. Turkmenistan uses the Turkmen manat (TMT), with an official rate of 3.50 TMT per $1. Exchange only at official banks or hotel exchange desks. International credit and debit cards do not work in Turkmenistan. Bring US dollars in clean, undamaged bills and exchange as needed.
