San Francisco to Valletta (SFO–MLA) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

US passport holders enter Malta visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen area. No advance application is needed. Malta is an EU member and Schengen member. Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area. At Malta International Airport (MLA), immigration stamps your passport at the non-EU line.

The 90-day Schengen clock runs across all 29 Schengen countries. Days spent in Italy, Greece, or any other Schengen state count toward the same 90-day limit. Malta is an archipelago of three inhabited islands: Malta (the largest, 246 square km), Gozo, and Comino. Valletta, the capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most concentrated historic areas in the world, built by the Knights of St. John after the Great Siege of 1565. The Gozo ferry from Cirkewwa runs every 45 minutes and takes 25 minutes. Comino's Blue Lagoon is a popular swimming and snorkeling spot reachable by boat from both Malta and Gozo.

No direct flights connect the US to Malta. Route through London (about 3 hours to MLA on Air Malta or Ryanair), Rome (about 1 hour 20 minutes), or Frankfurt (about 2 hours 30 minutes). Total travel time from the US East Coast runs 11 to 15 hours. Malta uses the euro, trading at roughly $1.08 per EUR 1. Card payments work at most businesses. The Tallinja bus network covers the entire island of Malta from the main hub in Valletta for EUR 1.50 ($1.62) per ride in winter and EUR 2 in summer, or EUR 21 ($22.70) for a 7-day Explore card that includes unlimited rides on Malta and Gozo buses and the Gozo ferry. Restaurant meals cost EUR 12 to EUR 25 ($13 to $27). Maltese and English are both official languages, so communication is never an issue.

BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) runs from downtown San Francisco (Embarcadero, Powell St.) to the SFO station and then a free AirTrain shuttle to all terminals (30–40 min from Embarcadero, $10.45). BART also connects Oakland and Berkeley; useful for East Bay travelers. Trains run from ~4am to midnight.Taxis from downtown San Francisco cost $40–60. Ride-hails (Uber, Lyft) pick up in the designated area in the garage and are often $30–50 depending on surge pricing. SamTrans buses serve Peninsula cities. Highway 101 and I-280 are heavily congested during commute hours; BART is faster than driving at those times.
