Riyadh to Zurich (RUH–ZRH) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Saudi passport holders need a Schengen visa to enter Switzerland. Apply at the Swiss Embassy in Riyadh or through TLScontact visa application centers in Riyadh and Jeddah. A short-stay (Type C) visa costs CHF 80 (about SAR 340) for adults and covers up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen area. Submit the application 15 to 45 days before travel. Processing takes 10 to 15 calendar days.

Required documents: passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure from Schengen with two blank pages, completed application form, two biometric photos, travel medical insurance covering CHF 30,000 (or EUR 30,000 equivalent), flight reservation, hotel booking, bank statements for the last 3 months, and employment or business letter. Switzerland is a popular destination for Saudi travelers, and the embassy processes a high volume of applications during summer months (June to August).

Direct flights from Riyadh to Geneva run about 5 hours 30 minutes on Saudia and Swiss International. Jeddah to Zurich runs about 6 hours. Switzerland uses the Swiss franc (CHF), trading at roughly 0.24 CHF per SAR 1 or about 4.20 SAR per CHF 1. Card payments work everywhere. No mandatory vaccinations. Switzerland is expensive: a restaurant meal costs CHF 25 to CHF 50 (SAR 105 to SAR 210), and a coffee runs CHF 4 to CHF 6 (SAR 17 to SAR 25). The Swiss Travel Pass covers all trains, buses, boats, and city transport at CHF 232 for 3 days or CHF 389 for 8 days. Interlaken, Lucerne, and Geneva are the most visited cities by Saudi and Gulf travelers, with Arabic-speaking services available at many hotels.

SBB trains from the airport station (below Check-in 2) to Zurich HB take 10 minutes and run every 10–15 minutes. Long-distance intercity trains to Geneva, Basel, Bern, and Lucerne depart directly from the airport station; Zurich Airport is one of the best-connected airports in Europe for onward rail travel. Taxis queue outside arrivals; fares to the city centre are CHF 55–75.Rental car desks are located in the arrivals area. Swiss customs exit is prompt for EU/Schengen arrivals. The Meet & Greet area is directly adjacent to baggage reclaim.

Temperate continental climate. Winters (November–February) are cold and frequently foggy on the Swiss Plateau; fog (Hochnebel) can persist for days and is the most common cause of delays, with the airport above the fog layer on clearer days but below it on others. Snow does occur but is well managed. Temperatures range from −2 to 5°C.

Summers (June–August) are warm at 22–28°C with afternoon thunderstorms that can be intense but brief. Spring and autumn are mild and variable. Hochnebel fog season (October–January) is the primary operational risk to plan around.
