Riyadh to Munich (RUH–MUC) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Saudi passport holders need a Schengen visa to enter Germany. Apply at the German Embassy in Riyadh or the Consulate General in Jeddah. A short-stay (Type C) visa costs EUR 80 (about SAR 320) for adults and covers up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Submit the application 15 to 45 days before travel through the VFS Global appointment system. Processing takes 10 to 15 calendar days, though summer months and Hajj season can push timelines longer.

Required documents: passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure from the Schengen area with two blank pages, completed application form, two biometric photos, travel medical insurance covering EUR 30,000, flight reservation, hotel booking or invitation letter, bank statements for the last 3 months, and an employment or business letter. Germany is one of the top Schengen destinations for Saudi applicants, and the visa covers all 27 Schengen countries.

Direct flights from Riyadh to Frankfurt run about 5 hours 30 minutes on Saudia and Lufthansa. Jeddah to Frankfurt and Munich are also served. Germany uses the euro, trading at roughly 3.95 SAR per EUR 1. Card payments work at most businesses, but smaller shops, bakeries, and some restaurants remain cash-only, so carry EUR notes. No mandatory vaccinations. Frankfurt's S-Bahn from the airport to the city center takes 11 minutes at EUR 5.35. Berlin, Munich, and Dusseldorf all have Arabic-speaking communities and halal dining options. The Deutschland-Ticket covers all regional trains and local transit nationwide for EUR 49 per month.

S8 S-Bahn to Marienplatz (central Munich) takes 40 minutes (€13.60). S1 offers an alternative route. Both run every 20 minutes, starting from around 4am. The Airport City Day Ticket (€12.80) covers all city zones and is worth buying if making multiple journeys.

Lufthansa Airport Bus to Hauptbahnhof costs €12 (45 min). Taxis to central Munich run €65–80. For Nuremberg, ICE trains run from the airport station via Munich Hauptbahnhof. The terminal complex (T1 and T2) is efficiently laid out with short walks between check-in and gates.

Continental climate at 453m elevation. Winters (December–February) bring regular snowfall and temperatures of −5 to 3°C. The airport is well-equipped for winter operations and rarely closes for snow, but heavy snowfall and black ice cause delays. Munich can be hit by Föhn wind events: a warm alpine wind that reduces visibility and generates turbulence.

Summers are warm (22–28°C) with afternoon thunderstorms common in July and August. These can be severe enough to ground aircraft temporarily. Spring and fall are pleasant but variable. October is reliably clear and often the best month for connections.
