Riyadh to Rome (RUH–FCO) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Saudi passport holders need a Schengen visa to enter Italy. Apply at the Italian Embassy in Riyadh or the Consulate in Jeddah through the VFS Global visa application center. A short-stay (Type C) visa costs EUR 80 (about SAR 320) for adults and covers up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the Schengen area. Submit the application 15 to 45 days before travel. Processing takes 10 to 15 calendar days.

Required documents: passport valid for at least 3 months beyond departure from the Schengen area with two blank pages, completed application form, two biometric photos, travel medical insurance covering EUR 30,000, flight reservation, hotel booking, bank statements for the last 3 months, and employment or business letter. Italy is among the most popular European destinations for Saudi travelers, with Rome, Milan, and Venice leading the list.

Direct flights from Riyadh to Rome Fiumicino run about 5 hours 30 minutes on Saudia and ITA Airways. Jeddah to Milan Malpensa runs about 5 hours 30 minutes. Italy uses the euro, trading at roughly 3.95 SAR per EUR 1. Card payments work at most businesses, though small trattorias and gelaterias may prefer cash. No mandatory vaccinations. Rome's metro costs EUR 1.50 per ride or EUR 7 for a 24-hour pass. The Frecciarossa high-speed train connects Rome to Milan in 2 hours 55 minutes (from EUR 19.90 booked early) and Rome to Naples in 1 hour 10 minutes (from EUR 9.90). Milan's Quadrilatero della Moda is a top luxury shopping district for Gulf visitors, and halal restaurants are common in Rome's Esquilino neighborhood and Milan's Porta Venezia area.

Leonardo Express to Roma Termini (32 min, €14) departs from inside the terminal every 30 minutes. Regional FL1 trains cost €8 and serve Trastevere, Ostiense, and Tiburtina; useful if your accommodation is near those stations.Official taxis (white, metered) from FCO to central Rome (within the Aurelian Walls) have a fixed €50 fare regardless of traffic. Agree on the fixed rate before departure. Ciampino (CIA) handles Ryanair and some charter flights; it is 40 minutes east of Rome by bus and a completely separate airport.

Mediterranean climate. Summers are hot and dry (28–36°C, June–August) with little rain and intense sunshine. Heat rarely disrupts flights but can make the terminal uncomfortable. Winters are mild (5–13°C) with rain primarily from November through February. Snow in Rome is rare, occurring once every few years, but when it falls the city and airport are largely unprepared. Even light accumulations cause significant disruption.

Spring and autumn are the most pleasant seasons (15–23°C). Sirocco winds from the Sahara occasionally bring warm dusty air and reduced visibility in spring. FCO has little fog risk and generally good flying weather compared to northern European hubs.
