Saudi passport holders need a visa to enter Eritrea. Apply at the Eritrean Embassy in Riyadh. Tourist visas cost about $70, require a passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry, two passport photos, a completed application form, and a letter of invitation or hotel booking. Processing takes 2 to 4 weeks. Eritrea does not offer e-visas or visas on arrival. Plan well ahead, as the embassy process moves slowly.

Once in Eritrea, a travel permit is required to move outside Asmara. Obtain it from the Ministry of Tourism office in Asmara, which takes 1 to 2 days. Photography near government or military buildings is restricted. Eritrea uses the nakfa (ERN) as its currency, and foreign exchange is handled at banks and authorized dealers. International bank cards do not work in Eritrea, so bring enough USD or EUR cash for your entire stay and exchange locally.

No direct flights connect Saudi Arabia to Eritrea. Route through Jeddah to Asmara via Cairo (EgyptAir, about 2 hours to Cairo then 2 hours 30 minutes to Asmara) or through Addis Ababa. The Jeddah-Asmara corridor has seasonal charter service during peak travel periods. Total travel time from Riyadh runs 7 to 12 hours. Asmara sits at 2,325 meters elevation with year-round mild temperatures between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. The city's Italian colonial architecture earned it UNESCO World Heritage status in 2017. The Fiat Tagliero building, Asmara Cathedral, and the Art Deco Cinema Impero are standout landmarks. Arabic is one of Eritrea's working languages alongside Tigrinya and English.
