US passport holders enter Greece visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period across the entire Schengen area. No advance application is needed. Greece is an EU member and Schengen member. Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen area. At Athens Eleftherios Venizelos (ATH), Thessaloniki (SKG), or any Greek island airport, immigration stamps your passport at the non-EU line.

The 90-day Schengen clock runs across all 29 Schengen countries. Days spent in Italy, France, Spain, or any other Schengen state count toward the same 90-day limit. Greece has dozens of airports on its islands: Santorini (JTR), Mykonos (JMK), Crete Heraklion (HER), Rhodes (RHO), and Corfu (CFU) all receive international flights. Island-hopping by ferry is a core part of Greek travel, with Blue Star Ferries, Hellenic Seaways, and SeaJets connecting the Cyclades, Dodecanese, and Ionian routes.

Direct flights from New York JFK to Athens run about 10 hours on Delta, United, and Emirates. Seasonal nonstop service operates from Philadelphia, Chicago, and Newark. Athens uses the euro, trading at roughly $1.08 per EUR 1. The Athens Metro runs 3 lines: Line 3 connects the airport to Syntagma Square in 40 minutes for EUR 9 ($9.70) one-way. Ferry tickets from Piraeus to Santorini cost EUR 35 to EUR 65 ($38 to $70) economy, taking 5 to 8 hours by standard ferry or 2 hours by high-speed. Greek taverna meals run EUR 10 to EUR 20 ($11 to $22) per person with wine.

SEPTA Airport Line rail runs from Center City Philadelphia (30th Street, Suburban, Jefferson, and Market East stations) to the airport in 25–30 minutes ($8 each way). Trains run every 30 minutes from about 5am to midnight. I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway) and I-95 are both frequently congested, making the train a consistent choice for anyone based near a SEPTA station.

Ride-shares from Center City cost $20–35 and take 20–40 minutes. Taxis are metered and slightly more.

Metro Line 3 departs from the basement level of the terminal to central Athens every 30 minutes (€10, 40 min). Express buses X95 (Syntagma), X96 (Piraeus port), and X93 (long-distance bus terminal) run 24 hours a day for €6.20. Taxis queue outside arrivals with fixed rates: €40 to the city centre during the day, €55 at night and on public holidays. Meters still run but the flat rate applies if higher.Rental car desks are in the arrivals area. The airport is 33 km east of Athens via the Attiki Odos motorway (toll). Ferries to the Greek islands depart from Piraeus port; the X96 bus connects the airport to the port directly.

Mediterranean climate. Summers (June–August) are hot and dry at 30–38°C with intense sunshine and very little rain. Flying conditions are excellent. Summer heat can affect tarmac operations. The airport sits on a coastal plain exposed to the Meltemi northerly winds in July–August, which can cause turbulence on approach but rarely close the airport.

Winters (December–February) are mild and rainy at 8–14°C. Snow is rare in Athens but occasional. Thunderstorms in autumn (October–November) can produce sharp delays. ATH has among the most reliable flying conditions of any major European hub.
