Chicago to Berlin (ORD–BER) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

US citizens enter Germany and the Schengen area visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. ETIAS authorization will be required when the EU system launches (EUR 7, valid 3 years). Passport validity must extend 3 months past planned Schengen departure.

Germany enforces EU duty-free allowances strictly: 200 cigarettes or 1L spirits. Declare goods over EUR 430 in value.

CTA Blue Line runs 24/7 from downtown Loop stations to O'Hare (45 min, $5). Pace buses serve suburbs. Ride-shares cost $35–55 from downtown depending on traffic; add 30+ minutes during rush hour on the Kennedy Expressway.Economy parking lots E/F connect via ATS people mover. Terminal 5 (international) is separate from Terminals 1–3; allow extra time for inter-terminal transfers.

The Airport Express (FEX) to Berlin Hauptbahnhof takes 30 minutes and costs €3.80 with a standard ABC-zone ticket (covered by the Berlin Welcome Card). Departs every 30 minutes. S9 to Spandau or Westkreuz also works (45–50 min, same fare).

Taxis to Mitte: €40–55 (35–50 min). Uber: €30–45. The train platforms are in the basement of Terminal 1; follow the "S-Bahn/FEX" signs from baggage claim. Rental car desks are in Terminal 1 arrivals. Regional trains to Magdeburg, Dresden, and Leipzig also stop at BER airport station.

Humid continental climate with warm summers and cold winters. Berlin winters (December–February) average −2–4°C with occasional snow and freezing rain. De-icing delays are routine in January and February but rarely cause mass cancellations. The airport's recent construction means modern de-icing infrastructure.

Summers (June–August) are warm at 22–28°C with afternoon thunderstorms possible in July. Spring and autumn are mild (10–18°C) and operationally stable. Strong westerly winds can make approaches to BER gusty. Overall disruption risk is moderate.
