Narita to Papeete (NRT–PPT) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Japanese passport holders enter French Polynesia visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. No fee, no advance application. French Polynesia is a French overseas collectivity and follows Schengen-adjacent rules, but days spent there do not count against your 90-day Schengen allowance in mainland Europe. Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond your planned departure with one blank page.

At immigration in Papeete (PPT), you may be asked for a return or onward ticket, proof of accommodation, and sufficient funds (roughly XPF 50,000 per day or about $450 equivalent is the informal guideline, though enforcement is rare for Japanese nationals). The ETIAS system, when implemented, will apply to French Polynesia as well.

No direct flights connect Japan to French Polynesia. Route through Auckland (about 5 hours to Papeete on Air Tahiti Nui), Los Angeles (about 8 hours to Papeete), or Honolulu. Total travel from Tokyo runs 16 to 22 hours depending on the connection. French Polynesia uses the CFP franc (XPF), pegged to the euro at 119.33 XPF per EUR. Credit cards are accepted at resorts and larger restaurants in Tahiti and Bora Bora, but smaller islands and local markets are cash-only. No vaccination requirements.

The Narita Express (N'EX) runs from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport in 60 minutes, with stops at Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Yokohama (¥3,070 one-way from Tokyo; discounted round-trip tickets available). Keisei Skyliner from Ueno takes 41 minutes to Terminal 1 (¥2,570); the faster option from east-side Tokyo. Keisei Limited Express is slower (80 min) but cheaper at ¥1,290.Limousine buses depart from major Tokyo hotels and stations for ¥3,200 and take 75–105 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis are extremely expensive (¥20,000–30,000+); avoid unless cost is no concern. The airport is 60 km from central Tokyo.
