Narita to Mexico City (NRT–MEX) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Japanese passport holders enter Mexico visa-free for up to 180 days for tourism. No advance application, no fee. Passport must be valid for the duration of stay. On the plane you receive an FMM (Forma Migratoria Multiple) immigration form, which is now electronic for most air arrivals. The FMM is free for stays under 7 days. For stays over 7 days, the fee of MXN 575 (about $33) is included in your airline ticket price.

Keep the FMM slip or digital confirmation until departure. Losing it means paying the fee again at the immigration office (INM) before you can leave. At immigration, you may be asked about your hotel and return flight. The 180-day allowance is generous, but the officer can stamp fewer days at their discretion. If you get fewer than needed, you can request an extension at any INM office.

Direct flights from Tokyo Narita to Mexico City (MEX) run about 12 hours 30 minutes on ANA (codeshare with Aeromexico) and Aeromexico. Connections through Los Angeles, Houston, or Dallas add 3 to 6 hours but open up flights to Cancun (CUN), Guadalajara (GDL), and other cities. Mexico uses the Mexican peso (MXN), trading at roughly 0.12 MXN per JPY. No vaccination requirements. Uber and DiDi work in Mexico City and most major cities, often cheaper and more reliable than street taxis.

The Narita Express (N'EX) runs from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport in 60 minutes, with stops at Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Yokohama (¥3,070 one-way from Tokyo; discounted round-trip tickets available). Keisei Skyliner from Ueno takes 41 minutes to Terminal 1 (¥2,570); the faster option from east-side Tokyo. Keisei Limited Express is slower (80 min) but cheaper at ¥1,290.Limousine buses depart from major Tokyo hotels and stations for ¥3,200 and take 75–105 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis are extremely expensive (¥20,000–30,000+); avoid unless cost is no concern. The airport is 60 km from central Tokyo.

Use only authorized airport taxis (purchase vouchers at official booths inside arrivals; do not take street taxis outside). Rates are zone-based: Centro/Zócalo MXN$180–250, Polanco MXN$250–320, Santa Fe MXN$350–450. Uber is not permitted for airport pickup at T1 (walk to street level at T2 to use Uber).Metrobús Line 4 to Buenavista (Metro hub) takes 30–40 min (MXN$12); a solid budget option. Metro Line 5 serves Terminal Aérea (T1). ADO buses depart from T1 to Puebla, Querétaro, and other cities. A second airport (AIFA, NLU) exists northeast of the city; confirm which airport your flight uses.

High-altitude subtropical climate at 2,240m. Temperatures are mild year-round (7–22°C) with little seasonal variation, no extreme heat or cold. The rainy season (May–October) brings daily afternoon thunderstorms, typically between 3–7pm, which frequently cause delays and can be intense. Hail is possible.

Dry season (November–April) offers the most reliable flying conditions. The airport's elevation means aircraft have reduced performance on hot days. Dense morning smog is common in winter inversions and occasionally reduces visibility. Earthquake risk (significant for Mexico City) has no direct flight impact but is worth knowing.
