Narita to Hong Kong (NRT–HKG) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Japanese passport holders enter Hong Kong visa-free for up to 90 days. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for at least 1 month beyond the date of entry (6 months is safer to avoid airline pushback at check-in). No return ticket is formally required, but immigration may ask about your onward plans.

At Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), use the e-Channel automated gates if you have registered on a previous visit, or go through the standard immigration counter. Processing is fast either way. The 90-day period is for Hong Kong only. Entering mainland China or Macau requires separate authorization. Extensions can be requested at the Immigration Department in Wan Chai before expiry, though approval is not guaranteed.

Direct flights from Tokyo Narita, Haneda, Osaka Kansai, Fukuoka, and Sapporo to Hong Kong run 4 hours 30 minutes to 5 hours 30 minutes. Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines, ANA, HK Express, and Peach operate the routes. Hong Kong uses the Hong Kong dollar (HKD), pegged at 7.75 to 7.85 HKD per $1. Octopus cards work on the MTR, buses, ferries, 7-Eleven, and most restaurants (buy one at the airport for HKD 150 including HKD 100 stored value). No mandatory vaccinations. Japanese yen is easily exchanged at competitive rates in Chungking Mansions or Hang Seng Bank branches.

The Narita Express (N'EX) runs from Tokyo Station to Narita Airport in 60 minutes, with stops at Shinjuku, Shibuya, and Yokohama (¥3,070 one-way from Tokyo; discounted round-trip tickets available). Keisei Skyliner from Ueno takes 41 minutes to Terminal 1 (¥2,570); the faster option from east-side Tokyo. Keisei Limited Express is slower (80 min) but cheaper at ¥1,290.Limousine buses depart from major Tokyo hotels and stations for ¥3,200 and take 75–105 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis are extremely expensive (¥20,000–30,000+); avoid unless cost is no concern. The airport is 60 km from central Tokyo.

Airport Express runs to Hong Kong Station (Central) in 24 minutes for HK$115, departing every 10 minutes from 5:54am to 1:02am. Octopus card discounts apply. Passengers can check bags in at the airport and retrieve them at Hong Kong or Kowloon Station.Taxis to Kowloon cost HK$250–350; to Hong Kong Island, HK$350–450. Ferry services connect to Macau (1 hr, HK$175–220) and Guangzhou/Shenzhen. The Ferry Terminal is in the airport building; no need to leave the terminal. Buses are slower but serve districts not near the MTR.

Subtropical monsoon climate. Typhoon season (June–October) is the primary disruption risk. The airport operates a T1/T3/T8 signal system and closes for Category T8 or above. Typhoons can arrive with 24–48 hours warning and typically pass in 12–24 hours. Check signals before departure during this window.

Winters are mild and mostly dry (12–20°C), ideal for flying. Spring brings fog and low cloud (March–April) that reduces runway visibility. Summer heat and humidity (30–34°C) are moderated at the airport by its coastal location on Lantau Island.
