British passport holders enter China visa-free for stays up to 30 days under the unilateral exemption policy extended through at least December 31, 2026. This covers tourism, business visits, family visits, and transit. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. No advance application or fee. You cannot convert this entry to a work or residence permit once inside the country.

Fill out the arrival card on the plane or at the immigration hall. Officers may ask for your itinerary, hotel bookings, and return ticket, though this is inconsistent. If you plan to stay beyond 30 days or engage in work, study, or journalism, apply for the appropriate visa at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) in London before departure (processing 4 to 7 working days, fees from $198 for single entry).

Direct flights from London Heathrow to Beijing (PEK) run about 9 hours 40 minutes, to Shanghai (PVG) about 11 hours 20 minutes. Air China, China Eastern, and British Airways operate nonstop. China uses the renminbi (CNY), trading at roughly 7.25 CNY per $1. Western bank cards work at ATMs and major hotels but many local businesses use WeChat Pay and Alipay exclusively. Both apps now allow linking foreign Visa/Mastercard cards for payment. No vaccination requirements for UK arrivals.

Heathrow Express runs from London Paddington to T5 and T2/T3 in 15–21 minutes (£37 single, cheaper booked online or via the Heathrow app). Elizabeth line (Crossrail) is a lower-cost alternative; Paddington to T5 in 34 minutes from £13.50 with an Oyster/contactless cap of £14.90. The Elizabeth line also serves central London stations including Bond Street, Farringdon, and Liverpool Street.London Underground Piccadilly line serves all terminals (T2/T3/T4/T5) from central London in 40–60 minutes (£6 with Oyster). Taxis (black cabs) from central London cost £55–90 depending on traffic. Coach services from Victoria Coach Station (National Express) cost from £10 booked in advance.

Follow signs to the Metro Line 18 station inside the terminal. The express service reaches Chengdu South Railway Station in 35 minutes (CNY 10), where you can transfer to Lines 1, 7, or 18 local stops for the rest of the city. To reach Tianfu Square, transfer at Century City and take Line 1 north (total about CNY 30, 55-65 minutes).

Airport buses depart from the ground transport center outside arrivals. Line 1 to Chunxi Road takes 60-80 minutes (CNY 15 daytime, CNY 25 after 23:30). Taxis queue at the designated rank and use meters; budget CNY 180-260 to central Chengdu. DiDi pickup is on the east side of arrivals and runs cheaper than taxis at CNY 90-130 to city center destinations.

Chengdu sits in the Sichuan Basin with a humid subtropical climate. Summers (June-September) hit 22-29 degrees C with heavy monsoon rain. Half the annual 1000mm of rainfall lands in these four months, arriving as afternoon thunderstorms. Winters (December-February) average 3-8 degrees C and stay overcast. Frost is rare but the persistent cloud cover and dampness make it feel colder than the numbers suggest.

Chengdu is one of the cloudiest cities in China with roughly 200 overcast days per year and only 1000 hours of annual sunshine. Spring warms unevenly with cold snaps into April. Autumn (late September-November) is the most comfortable stretch with clear-ish skies and mild temperatures. Pack layers and rain gear regardless of season; an umbrella earns its place year-round here.
