This covers tourism, business visits, family visits, and transit. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. No advance application or fee. You cannot convert this entry to a work or residence permit once inside the country.

Fill out the arrival card on the plane or at the immigration hall. Officers may ask for your itinerary, hotel bookings, and return ticket, though this is inconsistent. If you plan to stay beyond 30 days or engage in work, study, or journalism, apply for the appropriate visa at the Chinese Visa Application Service Centre (CVASC) in London before departure (processing 4 to 7 working days, fees from $198 for single entry).

Direct flights from London Heathrow to Beijing (PEK) run about 9 hours 40 minutes, to Shanghai (PVG) about 11 hours 20 minutes. Air China, China Eastern, and British Airways operate nonstop. China uses the renminbi (CNY), trading at roughly 7.25 CNY per $1. Western bank cards work at ATMs and major hotels but many local businesses use WeChat Pay and Alipay exclusively. Both apps now allow linking foreign Visa/Mastercard cards for payment. No vaccination requirements for UK arrivals.

Heathrow Express runs from London Paddington to T5 and T2/T3 in 15–21 minutes (£37 single, cheaper booked online or via the Heathrow app). Elizabeth line (Crossrail) is a lower-cost alternative; Paddington to T5 in 34 minutes from £13.50 with an Oyster/contactless cap of £14.90. The Elizabeth line also serves central London stations including Bond Street, Farringdon, and Liverpool Street.London Underground Piccadilly line serves all terminals (T2/T3/T4/T5) from central London in 40–60 minutes (£6 with Oyster). Taxis (black cabs) from central London cost £55–90 depending on traffic. Coach services from Victoria Coach Station (National Express) cost from £10 booked in advance.

Metro Line 3 runs from the airport to the city centre and Harbin Station in 40–50 minutes for CNY 6–10. Taxis and DiDi queue outside arrivals; fares to downtown are CNY 60–100. Airport shuttle buses serve multiple zones and the railway station for CNY 20. In winter, confirm transportation availability; heavy snowfall occasionally disrupts surface transport temporarily.Harbin is a hub for northeast China (Manchuria) with connections to Shenyang, Dalian, Changchun, and cross-border routes to Russia. Rental car desks are in the arrivals hall.

Severe subarctic continental climate, one of the coldest major cities in China. Winters (November–March) are extreme, with temperatures regularly reaching −20 to −30°C and occasional lows below −35°C. Heavy snowfall, black ice, and extreme cold cause frequent de-icing delays and occasional ground stops. Harbin's famous Ice Festival runs January–February.

Summers (June–August) are short and warm at 22–30°C with low humidity and good flying conditions. Spring and autumn are brief transitional periods. Pack the heaviest possible cold-weather gear for winter travel. Thin layers are wholly inadequate.
