British passport holders need an eVisitor visa (subclass 651) to enter Australia. The eVisitor is free, processed within 24 hours (most approved in minutes), and allows multiple entries for stays of up to 90 days per visit over a 12-month period. Apply online through the Australian Department of Home Affairs website. No paper visa is issued; it is linked to your passport number electronically.

Passport must be valid for the duration of the stay. You must declare any criminal convictions (including spent convictions) on the application, and certain offenses lead to automatic refusal. Bring proof of onward travel and sufficient funds. For longer stays, the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417) is available to UK nationals aged 18 to 35, costs AUD 640 (about $415), and allows 12 months with work rights.

Direct flights from London Heathrow to Sydney or Perth run 22 to 24 hours depending on routing. Perth nonstops on Qantas take about 17 hours. Australia enforces strict biosecurity: food, plant material, wooden items, and dirty shoes get inspected and can be confiscated or fined up to AUD 626 on the spot. No vaccination requirements for UK arrivals, but the Incoming Passenger Card asks about health symptoms and farm contact in the previous 30 days.

Heathrow Express runs from London Paddington to T5 and T2/T3 in 15–21 minutes (£37 single, cheaper booked online or via the Heathrow app). Elizabeth line (Crossrail) is a lower-cost alternative; Paddington to T5 in 34 minutes from £13.50 with an Oyster/contactless cap of £14.90. The Elizabeth line also serves central London stations including Bond Street, Farringdon, and Liverpool Street.London Underground Piccadilly line serves all terminals (T2/T3/T4/T5) from central London in 40–60 minutes (£6 with Oyster). Taxis (black cabs) from central London cost £55–90 depending on traffic. Coach services from Victoria Coach Station (National Express) cost from £10 booked in advance.

Follow signs from arrivals to the Airtrain platform. Trains to Brisbane CBD take 20 minutes, stopping at Eagle Junction, Fortitude Valley, Central, Roma Street, and South Brisbane (AUD 22.30 walk-up, or AUD 10.95-18.96 pre-booked). Services depart every 15 minutes during peak hours and run until 22:04. The last train is the last train; after that you need a taxi or ride-hail.

Uber and Didi pickup is at the designated rideshare zone on the ground transport level (AUD 25-45 to the CBD, plus AUD 4.86 airport surcharge). Standard taxis queue at the rank and cost AUD 55-80 to central Brisbane. Car rental desks are in the arrivals hall. The Gateway Motorway connects to the Gold Coast (75 minutes south) and Sunshine Coast (90 minutes north) if you are heading past the city.

Brisbane is subtropical with warm, humid summers and dry, mild winters. Summer (December-February) averages 21-30 degrees C with afternoon thunderstorms that build fast and dump heavy rain. February is the wettest month at 150mm. Heatwaves can push past 40 degrees C but are uncommon. Winter (June-August) is dry and pleasant at 10-21 degrees C with cool mornings and warm afternoons. Frost is almost unheard of.

Autumn (March-May) tapers off the humidity with daytime highs of 18-25 degrees C and clear skies. Spring (September-November) warms steadily with occasional dry, windy stretches early on. Annual rainfall is about 1150mm, concentrated in the summer wet season. Pack light layers for winter evenings and breathable clothing for summer. An umbrella earns its keep from November through March.
