Travel Essentials
KMG: CST · AMS: CEST
When it's 6:00 PM in Kunming, it's 12:00 PM in Amsterdam.
Chinese passport holders require a Schengen visa to enter the Netherlands. The visa allows stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period and must be applied for at the Dutch embassy or a VFS Global centre in China. Passport must be valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure from the Schengen zone with at least two blank pages. ETIAS pre-travel authorization will be required once the EU system launches, but it will not replace the visa requirement for Chinese nationals.
Kunming Metro Line 6 runs from Kunming South Railway Station and Guangfu Road to the airport in 40–55 minutes (¥6–8). Trains operate 6am to 11pm and bypass the expressway congestion that affects taxis during peak hours.
The airport is 26km northeast of central Kunming. Taxis cost ¥60–90 and take 40–60 minutes. Airport express coaches (¥25–30) serve major hotels. Traffic on the Kunming–Changshui Expressway can be heavy during holidays.
Trains depart directly from inside the terminal (Schiphol Plaza) to Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (15 min, €5.70). Direct intercity trains also serve Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and Eindhoven without requiring transfers. NS Hispeed connects to Brussels (1h 50m) and Paris CDG (3h 20m).
Taxis use a meter; Amsterdam Centraal costs €35–50. Ride-hail apps (Uber, Bolt) are cheaper at €25–40. Car rental agencies are at the terminal. Bus 397 to Leidseplein is the budget option (€5.50).
Temperate maritime climate, mild and frequently overcast year-round. Winters are cold (0–7°C) with regular rain and occasional snow or freezing fog. AMS handles de-icing efficiently but heavy snowfall (rare) causes cascading delays across the network. Fog is the primary winter disruption risk, particularly November through February.
Summers are warm (17–24°C) with long days and moderate rain. Thunderstorms in July–August cause brief but sharp delays. Strong crosswinds from the North Sea affect small aircraft year-round. Pack a waterproof layer regardless of season.
