US passport holders can obtain a free visa on arrival at Jacksons International Airport (POM) in Port Moresby for stays up to 60 days. The visa on arrival is a single-entry tourist visa issued at the immigration counter. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry with at least 2 blank pages. A return or onward ticket and proof of accommodation are required. Bring a printed hotel booking or a letter of invitation if staying with contacts.

The 60-day stay can be extended at the Immigration and Citizenship Authority in Port Moresby. Papua New Guinea has over 800 languages, the most of any country on earth. The Kokoda Track, a 96km trail through the Owen Stanley Range, takes 4 to 12 days to trek and requires a licensed guide and permit (PGK 150, about $40). Trekking season runs April to November. The Sepik River region is famous for traditional art and spirit houses. Diving at Kimbe Bay, Milne Bay, and Rabaul explores coral reefs and WWII wrecks.

No direct flights connect the US to Papua New Guinea. Route through Manila (about 5 hours to POM on Philippine Airlines), Singapore (about 6 hours 30 minutes on Air Niugini), or Brisbane (about 3 hours 30 minutes on Air Niugini). Total travel time from the US West Coast runs 18 to 24 hours. Papua New Guinea uses the Papua New Guinean kina (PGK), trading at roughly 3.88 PGK per $1. ATMs in Port Moresby and major towns dispense kina. Card payments work at hotels and some restaurants in Port Moresby and Lae. Cash is essential outside the two main cities. Domestic flights on Air Niugini and PNG Air connect 20+ airstrips across the country: Port Moresby to Mount Hagen costs PGK 500 to PGK 1,200 ($130 to $310) one way. Public motor vehicles (PMVs) are the local bus system at PGK 1 to PGK 5 per ride in towns.

The AirTrain connects JFK to the NYC subway and Long Island Rail Road at Jamaica Station (Howard Beach is the other connection point). Subway fare plus AirTrain totals $9.25 from midtown Manhattan; allow 60–75 minutes. LIRR from Penn Station takes 25–30 minutes to Jamaica, then 8–10 minutes on AirTrain; total fare around $10–15 depending on time of day.Taxis from Manhattan to JFK are a flat rate of $70 plus tolls and tip ($85–95 all-in). Ride-shares cost $45–80 depending on traffic and time of day. A dedicated express rail (JFK Connect) has been proposed but does not exist yet.
