Istanbul to Narita (IST–NRT) — Airlines, Schedules & Connections

Turkish passport holders enter Japan visa-free for up to 90 days. No fee, no advance application. You must hold a machine-readable passport (MRP) or ePassport compliant with ICAO standards. Passport must be valid for the duration of the stay. At Narita (NRT), Haneda (HND), Kansai (KIX), or other international airports, you receive a stamp at immigration after fingerprinting and a photo. A return or onward ticket may be requested. Fill out the Visit Japan Web form at vjw.digital.go.jp before arrival to expedite immigration and customs.

The 90-day visa-free stay covers tourism, visiting family, and attending business meetings or conferences. It does not cover employment or paid activities. For stays beyond 90 days, apply at a Japanese embassy before travel. Turkey is one of the few non-Western countries with visa-free access to Japan. Turkish tourism to Japan has grown rapidly, with direct flights connecting Istanbul to Tokyo.

Direct flights from Istanbul (IST) to Tokyo Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND) run about 11 hours on Turkish Airlines and Japan Airlines (codeshare). Istanbul to Osaka Kansai (KIX) runs about 11 hours 30 minutes on Turkish Airlines. Japan uses the Japanese yen (JPY), trading at roughly 4.5 JPY per TRY 1. IC cards (Suica, PASMO) work on all trains, buses, and convenience stores. A Japan Rail Pass for 7 days costs JPY 50,000 (about TRY 11,100) and covers unlimited travel on JR trains including the Shinkansen. Tokyo Metro costs JPY 170 to JPY 320 per ride. Card payments are expanding, but cash remains important at small restaurants and shops.

Istanbul Metro M11 Gayrettepe–İstanbul Havalimanı line connects the airport to the broader metro network; from Gayrettepe (Mecidiyeköy/Levent area) the journey is about 35 minutes (₺60–70 with Istanbulkart). The line runs roughly 5am to midnight.Havaist express buses serve Taksim, Kadıköy, and other major hubs (₺50–80, 45–90 minutes depending on traffic). Taxis use a meter; expect ₺400–600 from Taksim or Sultanahmet. The airport is 35km northwest of the city; traffic on the O-7 motorway can be severe during peak hours.

Keisei Skyliner (41 min to Ueno, ¥2,570) and Narita Express (N'EX, 60 min to Tokyo Station, ¥3,070) are the primary train options. Limousine buses serve major hotels throughout Tokyo, Yokohama, and even Osaka for ¥3,200–¥6,000. Terminals 1, 2, and 3 are connected by free shuttle bus; Terminal 3 (LCC) is a 15-minute walk or shuttle from Terminal 2.

Rental car desks are in the arrivals halls. Highway Bus (cheaper than limousine) is available to many cities. IC card (Suica/Pasmo) works on Keisei and JR lines from NRT at standard fares.

Humid subtropical climate. Summers (June–September) are hot, very humid, and subject to the rainy season (tsuyu) in June–July, followed by typhoon season peaking in August–October. Typhoons can close Narita for 12–24 hours. The airport is particularly exposed on the Chiba plain. Temperatures reach 28–34°C.

Winters (December–February) are cool and dry at 3–10°C with clear skies. This is the most reliable flying season. Snow is infrequent but causes significant disruption when it occurs. The Kanto plain is ill-equipped for heavy snowfall. Spring (late March–April) is mild.
