At Velana International Airport (MLE) in Male, immigration stamps you in after checking your documents and declaration. The 30-day visa on arrival can be extended for up to 60 additional days (90 days total) at the Maldives Immigration Department in Male for a fee of MVR 750 (about TRY 1,700). The Maldives is a Muslim country: alcohol is served only at licensed resorts, not on inhabited local islands.

Turkish Airlines operates direct flights from Istanbul (IST) to Male in about 8 hours 30 minutes. The Maldives uses the Maldivian rufiyaa (MVR), but US dollars are accepted at all resorts and most guesthouses. ATMs in Male dispense rufiyaa. Speedboat transfers from Male airport to nearby atolls cost $150 to $400 per person. Seaplane transfers to distant resorts run $300 to $600 return. Budget guesthouses on local islands like Maafushi start at $50 per night, far less than resort rates on private islands.

Istanbul Metro M11 Gayrettepe–İstanbul Havalimanı line connects the airport to the broader metro network; from Gayrettepe (Mecidiyeköy/Levent area) the journey is about 35 minutes (₺60–70 with Istanbulkart). The line runs roughly 5am to midnight.Havaist express buses serve Taksim, Kadıköy, and other major hubs (₺50–80, 45–90 minutes depending on traffic). Taxis use a meter; expect ₺400–600 from Taksim or Sultanahmet. The airport is 35km northwest of the city; traffic on the O-7 motorway can be severe during peak hours.
