US passport holders enter Kosovo visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period. No advance application is needed. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. At Pristina International Airport Adem Jashari (PRN), immigration stamps your passport after a quick review. Kosovo declared independence in 2008 and is recognized by the United States and over 100 other countries.

For stays beyond 90 days, apply for a temporary residence permit at the Kosovo Department of Citizenship, Asylum and Migration in Pristina. Kosovo uses the euro as its official currency despite not being an EU or eurozone member. The country adopted the euro unilaterally. If entering Kosovo and then traveling to Serbia, note that Serbia does not recognize Kosovo entry stamps. If you plan to visit both countries, enter Serbia first from a non-Kosovo border, then cross into Kosovo, and return to Serbia through the same Kosovo-Serbia crossing point.

No direct flights connect the US to Kosovo. Route through Istanbul (about 1 hour 40 minutes to PRN on Turkish Airlines or Pegasus Airlines), Zurich (about 2 hours on Swiss or Helvetic Airways), Vienna (about 2 hours on Austrian or Wizz Air), or Munich (about 2 hours on Lufthansa). Total travel time from the US East Coast runs 12 to 16 hours. Kosovo uses the euro, trading at roughly $1.08 per EUR 1. Cash dominates daily transactions. ATMs are common in Pristina and larger towns. A bus from PRN airport to Pristina city center costs EUR 3 and takes about 30 minutes. Taxis from the airport run EUR 15 to EUR 20. Pristina to Prizren by bus takes about 1 hour 30 minutes for EUR 4. Restaurant meals in Pristina cost EUR 5 to EUR 12, making Kosovo one of Europe's most affordable destinations.

WMATA Silver Line Metro now reaches Dulles directly; take Silver Line to Washington Dulles Airport station (about 65 min from Metro Center, ~$7). The connection opened in late 2022.Ride-shares from downtown DC run $35–60 and take 35–50 minutes via I-66 (longer during peak hours). Washington Flyer coach to Wiehle-Reston East Metro costs $6. The airport is 27 miles from downtown; taxis are expensive ($60–80).
