Japanese passport holders can enter Brazil visa-free for up to 90 days for tourism or business. No fee, no advance application. Passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry. You need a return or onward ticket. The 90-day stay can be extended once for another 90 days at a Federal Police office before expiry, for BRL 200 (about $40).

At immigration, you receive an electronic entry stamp (Brazil discontinued physical entry cards in 2024). Keep your boarding pass and hotel details accessible. If asked about your travel purpose, "tourism" is sufficient. For stays beyond 180 days in a 12-month period, a visa is required regardless of extensions.

No direct flights connect Japan to Brazil. The main routing is Tokyo Narita or Haneda through Houston (IAH), Dallas (DFW), or Miami (MIA) to Sao Paulo Guarulhos (GRU), with total travel times of 24 to 30 hours. A US transit visa or ESTA is required for connections through the US. Alternatively, route through Doha or Dubai to GRU, avoiding US transit requirements. Brazil uses the Brazilian real (BRL), trading at roughly 5.0 BRL per $1. Yellow fever vaccination is strongly advised for travel to the Amazon region and Pantanal. Japanese nationals have deep historical ties to Brazil, with the largest Japanese diaspora outside Japan (about 2 million people, concentrated in Sao Paulo).

Keikyu Line from Shinagawa reaches Haneda in 13 minutes (¥310). Tokyo Monorail from Hamamatsucho takes 15–22 minutes (¥500). Both run frequently from 5am to midnight. Haneda's central location makes it by far the most convenient Tokyo airport.Taxis from central Tokyo cost ¥3,500–5,500 depending on destination and traffic. Limousine buses serve major hotels and stations (¥600–1,100). Ride-shares (GO, S.RIDE) are growing in Japan. The airport is 14km from central Tokyo, significantly closer than Narita.
